Bibio — A Mineral Love (March 31, 2016)

Bibio — A Mineral Love (March 31, 2016) Bibio — A Mineral Love (March 31, 2016)•ο→   Jako těžký romantik prožívám teď svátek. The 13–track LP features appearances from Olivier St. Louis, Wax Stag and Australian artist Gotye, who scored a global hit in 2011 with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” It was made from scratch with no samples and Stephen Wilkinson, AKA Bibio, says it was influenced by ‘70s and ‘80s American TV themes and ‘90s dance tunes. The folk–meets–electronica project of self–taught producer/multi–instrumentalist Stephen Wilkinson.
•ο→   Perhaps Wilkinson’s best instrument is his mastery over ambience.  It is fundamental to and evoked by every physical instrument he picks up, be it his finger–picked electric guitar or his tape recorder.  The purpose, then, becomes to create a self–sustaining world of various interdependent comings and goings that require careful blueprints and a well–researched list of harmonious ingredients.  The result is a well–tempered mix of organic and contrived capable of rivaling even the most fertile metropolis.Instruments: Guitar, bass guitar, singing, synthesizer, computers, alto saxophone

℗ 2016 Warp Records Limited•ο→   His eighth album, “A Mineral Love”.
•ο→   Warp’s dreamiest mainstay returns to his regular label on April 1 for an album “built from memories”. A Mineral Love “uses familiar forms as a common language to communicate new ideas” but eschews sampling.
•ο→   “I partly want it to sound like sampled records,” says the English producer, born Stephen Wilkinson, says, “but by crafting every single detail myself and colouring it to have familiar textures that resonate [with] people’s forgotten memories.”
•ο→   “Some tracks are influenced by records I listen to often and some from ghosts of memories of things I heard while growing up, like 70s/80s American TV themes or 90s dance,” he adds.
•   Bibio reaches album number seven with the carefully constructed tales found within A Mineral Love. Picking up where his The Green EP left off, A Mineral Love beautifully ties together its influences from the ghosts of music that surrounded him during his childhood from 90’s jungle and hardcore dance tracks to late 70’s and into early 80’s American TV show themes. Elements of previous Bibio releases weave their way in from the heart breakingly melancholy Petals to the Americana grassroots folk of Wren Tails, while his collab with Olivier St. Louis Why So Serious? and recent single Feeling is a prime time head nodding funk with just the right amount of disco sure to get your mind and body moving. Fans of old are gonna find much to enjoy here whilst newcomers will easily become lost in its rich tapestry. A Mineral Love and a record you will too. Label: https://warp.net/Words / Aaron Coultate
•ο→   “This album celebrates the sacred and precious struggles of human insecurities through many windows of familiar musical forms,” says Wilkinson. “It’s also a celebration of my love of the craft of record making, drawing influences from many sources across all decades from the late ‘60s to the present. All these referential forms have a twist, some are more full–on cocktails.”
•ο→   He adds: “The album as a whole is an unashamed expression of my fondness of, and need for, variety. The juxtapositions between tracks are well considered and I’m comfortable with them — this is how I enjoy music. This is not a purist record, it is not trying to authentically recreate a specific time or genre but rather use familiar forms as a common language to communicate new ideas and new messages. I want to sing about struggle and tragedy with warmth, sympathy and respect. I want sadness to have bittersweet hope.”
