Christopher Paul Stelling — False Cities (2013)

Christopher Paul Stelling False Cities
¤¤  Singer–songwriter Christopher Paul Stelling has been on the road isinge he released his debut album Songs of Praise and Scorn in February 2012. He has seen a lot while traveling and many tales found their way to his new album False Cities. He is old school, relying on his voice and acoustic guitar to get his message across, with a bit of violin (Kieren Ledwigde) and bass (Michael Harlen).
¤¤  His hoarse vocals, not unlike Kevin Kinney and Malcolm Holcombe, add a touch of Gothic to the songs with lyrics that owe a huge debt to gospel. He uses field recordings of creaking doors and crickets. Stelling has come up with a recipe for tasty Americana that will be embraced by folkies all over the world.

Description:
¤¤  "Stelling is back with the release of his sophomore LP False Cities, an album that draws heavily from the Stelling’s travels in the past year, one he spent almost constantly on tour.
¤¤  The album cover shows an acoustic guitar against a beat–up, vintage–looking background. As you’d expect from such an image, the collection’s 10 songs are rustic and folksy.
¤¤  Opener “Brick x Brick” is a gruff outlaw country number that would fit perfectly in the soundtrack of a decades–old western film. Elsewhere, “Who I Am” has a faint undercurrent of baroque delicacy to its folksiness, while the soft harmonies of “You Can Make It” recall Iron & Wine’s first couple of albums, and “Homesick Tributaries” resembles the sweetness of the Avett Brothers. For the most part, however, these acoustic tunes are filled with raw energy and urgent vibes."
In french:
¤¤  Du très bon folk acoustique "a l'ancienne". C'est le second album de ce jeune auteur Newyorkais. A découvrir.
