Description:
”“★λ★”“     ‘Spirit Reflection’ is the third album LP from Los Angeles singer~songwriter Gaby Hernandez. Blissful layers of instrumentation, electronics, vocal harmonies and folkloric percussion intertwine with west coast feel to create a unique, beautiful and multi~layered album.
”“★λ★”“     ‘Spirit Reflection’ features a stellar line~up of LA talent; jazz star Kamasi Washington, Stuart Howard (AKA Lapalux), Kelis and Gaslamp killer collaborator Dexter Story, plus Ninja Tune, Plug Research and Soul Jazz artist Carlos Niño aka Ammoncontact, Miguel Atwood~Ferguson and GB all accompany Gaby, with stunning results.
”“★λ★”“     The album has already received support from Nemone, Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Toshio Matsuura (U.F.O.) and J~Rocc (Beat Junkies) amongst many others.
”“★λ★”“     In our opinion this is a future classic, and an ‘album’ in the truest sense of the word. Brilliant.
Review
”“★λ★”“     The deluxe version features unreleased tracks, instrumentals, versions and remixes.
Spirit Reflection review — weird and wonderful Brazilian grooves:
John Lewis, Thursday 15 June 2017 18.30 BST / Score: ****
”“★λ★”“     She’s a Chilean~American from Los Angeles who sings in English and Spanish, but Gaby Hernandez’s electro~acoustic creations are heavily informed by the weirdest and most wonderful areas of Brazilian music, from bossa nova to funk carioca.
”“★λ★”“     “Lo Mas Dulce” is a futuristic update of Tropicália, where a clattering berimbau groove is overlaid with space~age synths. Entranced is a galloping bossa waltz where the entire song is sung on a single note, like Jobim’s “One Note Samba”, while “My Baobab Tree” is a gorgeous choro ballad sweetened with woozy guitars. Fellow Angeleno Kamasi Washington provides tightly harmonised saxophone arrangements on three tracks but, throughout, the emphasis is on strong, bel canto vocal melodies, dreamy chord changes and seductive rhythms. Impressively, Hernandez and her collaborators (including oddball producer Dexter Story) manage to groove hard despite using the most minimal, low~volume percussion, all brushed snares, tinkling cowbells and artfully fluttering hi~hats. — Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/)
”“★λ★”“     The mighty Miguel Atwood~Ferguson — Los Angeles based multi~instrumentalist, session musician, arranger, composer, music director, producer, DJ, and educator who had worked with Ray Charles, Flying Lotus, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Bilal, Seu Jorge, and Thundercat amongst others — delivers a beautiful ‘strings & vocal’ mix.
”“★λ★”“     Natureboy Flako, Chilean~born producer extraordinaire currently residing in Berlin via LA remixes Lo Mas Dulce and takes it on a percussion~heavy G~Funk tip.
”“★λ★”“     UK lo~fi/deep house producer Greymatter flips Super Nova Lovers into a slow motion, spaced~out, beatdown monster.
”“★λ★”“     Ologist 4K remixes Messy Love and takes it on a banging hip hop vibe. Ologist is a Virginia based producer best known for his soulful hip hop instrumentals. As a member of the production crew Better Beat Bureau (BBB), he’s released three instrumental projects and a series of behind the beat videos. The BBB crew members have crafted tracks for some hip hop greats, including Pharoahe Monch, Supastition, Fat Joe, Skyzoo and more. When he’s not producing tracks or collecting records, he’s working on his new label Common Good Records along with partner Jason “Analog Burners” McGuiness. — gabyhernandez.bandcamp.com
