• They have taken their good time, Spleen United, getting this third full length out. ‘School Of Euphoria’, following the awesome ‘Neanderthal’ (2008), has in fact been announced a couple of times, latest about a year and half ago with 6+ minute single ‘Sunset To Sunset’ which inspired an improvised 24 hour outdoor set, but delays became the name of the game – probably also due to the quartet’s perfectionism.
• Anyway, here it is and on it Spleen United take another leap away from the “rock” in synthrock, completely abandoning the guitar and letting 1990s electro, house and (euro)dance dominate the expression. It was a move hinted on ‘Neanderthal’ and almost demonstratively accentuated live (not least with raving, The Flaming Lips sampling ‘Loebner’, named after my good friend and music journalist Lars Löbner Jeppesen), and it’s a move making excellent sense in especially opening trio ‘Days Of Thunder’, ‘Misery’ featuring the former Mrs. Stallone, Gitte Nielsen, and aforementioned ‘Sunset To Sunset’.
• ‘Euphoria’ offers a poppy breather and London Beat piano before ‘Bright Cities Keep Me Awake’ (available for free download on spleenunited.dk) again picks up the aggressive pace, leaving ‘Groundspeed’, ‘Simplicity’ and album closer ‘It’s A Wild Life’ behind as the weak links on an otherwise impressive album. Still a big fan…
