The Clang Group — Practice (September 30, 2016)

The Clang Group — Practice (September 30, 2016) The Clang Group — Practice (September 30, 2016)ψ   Formed two years ago, The Clang Group are that band. Their first LP is called Practice.
ψ   Recorded at Iguana Studio in Brixton with musician mates and long time cohorts (including Suggs and Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay), Practice is jagged, melodious, ingenious, impulsive and exhilarating. Usually all the same time. Driven by a frantic and restless energy, it’s exactly the kind of record you’d hope someone would make if they woke up aged 60 thinking, “Fuck it, I’m going to start a rock’n’roll band.” Yes, that good. On turning 60, legendary producer Clive Langer decided it was time to get a band together. Recorded at Iguana Studio in Brixton with musician mates and long–time cohorts (including Suggs and Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay), ‘Practice’ is jagged, melodious, ingenious, impulsive and exhilarating. Driven by a frantic and restless energy, ‘Practice’ is exactly the kind of record you’d hope someone would make if they woke up aged 60 thinking, “Sod it, I’m going to start a rock & roll band.”

••→   “Sometimes I’ll be walking along and a lyric will come to me, but normally I’m just working on the music and some idea will come. Then I’ll start messing about with it so it’s not too much by the book. I’m not very good at writing normal formula pop. I write songs that are a bit ‘to the left’...I try and mess things up, to throw them up in the air a bit and see where they land.” — Clive Langer on the songwriting process
••→   Clanger aka Cliff Hanger aka Clive Langer wants to be a pop star at the age of 60!
••→   After 35 years of producing other people’s discs for other dreamers (including Elvis Costello, Madness, Morrissey, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, The Teardrop Explodes and most recently his new label mates The Amazing Snakeheads) it’s about time he got back to what he loved best.
••→   So...he’s only gone and done it, started a rock and roll band, The Clang Group, with the legendary Roxy Music saxophonist Andy Mackay.
••→   The concept was conceived at a dinner in February 2014 in Bethnal Green with drummer Gregg Braden bemoaning the lack of stage action. These two musicians having a coincidental window decide to form a band there and then.
••→   The Sensational Deaf School, Clive’s original band, have had a remarkable renaissance in the last few years, rejuvenating Clive’s love of playing his old guitar, with astonishing aplomb on this remarkable EP.  Twang Twang Twang!! Electric Twang Ooooh eeeh ooohy!! Clang Bangg Wallop! What a Picture!
••→   Now for your aural perusal I have in my tremulous sweating hands The Clang Group EP making a Global Work Space for Aural Meeting!!
••→   Which includes Clive revisiting the incredible Shipbuilding which he wrote with Elvis Costello for the ‘godfather’ Robert Wyatt.
••→   “What a great experience and pioneering idea to use analogue sound and photography to convey and display the looks and thoughts of such a varied bunch of songwriters. ” — Clive Langer
