Ben Brockett: Ben plays guitar, sings, writes the songs and wrote this section of the site. He is a really rather handsome chap with angelic curly hair, a strong Roman nose and well defined forearms. He is the long suffering organiser/administrator of The Galleons and though he loves them dearly he wishes they would answer texts and emails more promptly. Before a gig he is most likely to be found annoying everyone with his fretting and pacing anxiously.
Phil Ward: Phil plays fretless bass and a very futuristic looking upright bass. In the 80’s he was in a band with Michaela Strachan and wore red leg warmers on stage. Phil loves the bass (almost as much as The Galleons) and is constantly trading them like some kind of low frequency Derek Trotter. Phil is also partial to the odd gadget or nine and is most likely to be found before a gig sipping an ale whilst syncing his iPad to the nearest hand dryer.
Paul Coventry: Paul plays the drums, glockenspiel and washboard. Originally from London, Paul has a (not so) hidden love of musical theatre and Red Bull (the two don’t always mix). Paul also creates The Galleons Video Diaries and is mostly likely to found before a gig interviewing the sound man.
Viktorija Mutore: Viktorija plays the piano and sings (mainly Latvian farming songs). She comes from Latvia where she studied classical piano before moving to England to study (or as we suspect to find and join The Galleons). Viktorija enjoys telling us anecdotes and teaching us rude words in Latvian. She is mostly likely to be found before a gig trying to find a telephone directory to sit on.
Beth Chesser: Beth sings and plays the Omnichord. She comes from The Isle of Wight but we don’t mind. Beth is the newest member of The Galleons and has impressed all with her voice and harmonies, just don’t ask her to clap and sing at the same time. Before a gig Beth is most likely to be found trying to work out why the Omnichord smells of burning again.
Joe Baker: Joe plays electric guitar. He loves Bob Dylan and sleeping. He also loves The Blues and French Cheese. Joe was born in Kent, brought up in Lincolnshire and has now moved back down south. As a result he speaks like a southerner but can’t say bath, path or laugh properly. His car has an extremely large turning circle. Before a gig Joe is most likely to be found catching forty winks.
Press:
“One of the UKs most exciting and original new bands, start with folk and then throw in a bit of almost everything else to create beautifully crafted songs, that stick in the mind long after the last chord has rung.”
Weymouth Folk Festival
“There are few bands to which you can apply the phrase British Folk band, but Brighton's The Galleons appear to be one of them as you can hear the influence of the four home nations in different parts of their sound. That said, the Welsh angle relates more to the indie influences that also permeate the sound rather than the fully fledged folkie bit. It gives their self titled debut album a subtle sense of fusion that provides a grand counter-balance to the floating easy on the ear vocal harmonies. "The Galleons" is a vibrant and reflective album, that feels a little different.”
Fatea Magazine
“The friendliest band in Brighton”
Amy Hill, Brighton Folk

Bio:
The Galleons are a 6 piece Indie-Folk band from Brighton. Their melodic, spell-binding music cuts a dash between traditional British Folk and modern Indie. Equally at home playing in a darkened, candle-lit cellar as they are in a sunny (or more often rainy) festival field, their music takes the audience from catchy, foot stomping folk-rock to mellow, mysterious lullabies and back.
In the past year they have played at an array of festivals across the UK and been invited back to all of them! Played a number of live radio sessions including the BBC, recorded their debut album, sold out venues such as the world famous Stables and recorded in a dungeon!
Each listener seems to compare them to a different artist. This year so far they have had; Low, Tunng, Fairport Convention, Belle & Sebastian, The Grateful Dead, Arcade Fire, Pentangle and Bonnie Prince Billy.
