Description:
Ξ   Ask Hayley Mary of The Jezabels what the difference is between complexity and accessibility in pop music, and she doesn’t miss a beat. “There isn’t one,” says The Jezabels frontwoman, “or at least, there doesn’t need to be. To me, pop is the darkest music of all. If you look not at what pop artists are consciously doing but at what they’re reflecting about the world, pop is the most twisted, weird and scary stuff. If you wanted to study the Earth from an alien perspective, listen to pop music.”
Ξ   The Brink is their second album and it was summoned from a dark place; despite the outstanding success of their masterful trio of EPs and then their first long player, Prisoner, which catapulted them from indie kudos to full blown mainstream success (debut #2 ARIA Chart, the Australian Music Prize Best Album award and a staggering, 8 ARIA nominations). The two solid years of international touring plan.

Ξ   Aussie pop–rock combo the Jezabels signed to Dine Alone Records for the Canadian release of their 2011 debut album Prisoner, and they’re once again teaming up with the label for the follow-up. The Brink is due out on February 18.
Ξ   The album was produced by Dan Grech–Marguerat (Lana Del Rey, Radiohead, the Vaccines). Its 10 songs were apparently created during a dark personal period that followed a lengthy bout of touring. But while frontwoman Hayley Mary says that the writing process was a “self–deprecating, self–loathing” time, the results are apparently filled with optimism and pop hooks. “Pop is a weird word,”  the singer said in a statement. “But as you get older and more experienced you do tend to have a greater appreciation of simplicity.
Ξ   We were growing into it with Prisoner, but now I think we have a better understanding of simple ideas communicated effectively, rather than piling all this stuff in because you think it’s beautiful.”
Ξ   The band’s album artwork has always been paramount to their releases — often reflecting the album’s themes. The artwork for ‘The Brink’ is hauntingly beautiful and uses a range of colours to provoke darkened emotional undertones.
Ξ   The clever painting tactics have allowed both characters to be immersed in each other, with only their hair and a single eye to determine which is which. This would almost certainly catch our eye on the shelf.
