Biography:
→ Tigran Hamasyan is a young musician born 1987 in Armenia. In 2003, Tigran moved with his family to Los Angeles, California. He began playing piano at the age of 3. Since the age of 13, he has played in European festivals. His reputation has steadily grown with every performance.
→ He has won prestigious piano competitions, most notably, the 2006 Thelonious Monk jazz piano competition under supervision of Herbie Hancock. He has earned serious recognition with 4 albums and hundreds of concerts all around the world (Montreux, Montreal, North Sea, Juan Les Pins, Marciac, London Jazz Festival, Winter Festival in NY). Recently, Tigran was named the winner of the 2013 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Contemporary Music.

→ His first album for Universal, recorded in Paris on solo piano, “A Fable”, was released in 2011. It sold impressively for an instrumental album with 30,000 units. → His new album “Shadow Theater”, recorded with his band, is due to be released Fall 2013. It exhibits continued growth as an original artist. It is fueled by his passion, atmospheric punk jazz improvisations fused with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. “Shadow Theater” is a fresh, inspiring sound that combines many colorful elements, capturing the listener into a musical journey.

→ Aratta Rebirth de Tigran: ce coup de jeune qu'on n'attendait plus
Lorsque, l'an dernier, j'ai absorbé la matière de Red Hail, premier album de son groupe Aratta Rebirth, je me suis dit que cette musique de Tigran Hamasyan aurait assurément l'effet d'une bombe lorsque jouée à Montréal. Au FIJM, on avait préféré présenter le pianiste en solo et en tant que sideman - du batteur Ari Hoenig. On l'a même ramené en solo une deuxième fois, question de tester notre patience. Bombe à retardement, donc.
→ La minuterie avait été fixée le 28 juin 2011, au Gesù à guichets fermés, 22h30. La bombe a finalement sauté. Près de deux heures de déflagrations!!! Certains mettront des jours à se remettre de ses effets collatéraux.
→ Imaginez si Tigran s'était adjoint Charles Altura, son guitariste prog-métal! Déjà avec des instruments acoustiques (sauf la basse électrique employée sporadiquement), le quintette Aratta Rebirth a carrément relancé la notion de musique instrumentale de pointe avec attitude rock. L'amalgame avait pris un coup de vieux, on le sait. Il vient de prendre un sérieux coup de jeune! Coup de jeune qu'on n'attendait plus? Depuis des décennies, le jazz rock s'est transformé en gargarisme technique, «fusak» pour plateaux de télévision et amateurs de performance sans musicalité.
→ Si l'album Red Hail dégage des arômes de hard rock/métal, sa version concert rappelle un tant soit peu le rock progressif, de par la lourdeur et la complexité de l'écriture proposée. Pendant que le piano de Tigran, la basse/contrebasse de Sam Minaie et la percussion de Nate Wood posent les bases de béton, la voix féminine et le saxophone (plus souvent soprano que ténor) tracent des lignes aériennes, absolument fabuleuses. Lignes inspirées du patrimoine musical arménien comme l'expliquait son compositeur en interview, et qui se fondent comme par magie dans une esthétique qui n'a rien à voir à priori.
→ Exposées par l'excellente chanteuse Areni Agbabian et le saxophoniste Ben Wendel, ces tracés mélodiques pour le moins sinueux font le contrepoids avec cette lourdeur émanant des autres instruments qui partagent la même complexité rythmique. Quant aux improvisations du pianiste et concepteur de cette musique carrément incendiaire, elles sont démentes. À son ensemble, Tigran Hamasyan impose une ferveur hors du commun. L'énergie du rock, le feu au cul! Qui plus est, la compétence: ces jeunes musiciens sont tous excellents, tant dans l'exécution des consignes de leur leader que dans l'impro. Imaginez... Tigran aura 24 ans dans quelques jours. Imaginez la suite!
