≡ Ben Caplan is an East Coast singer/songwriter with a storyteller’s pen, a flair for the dramatic and a talented Gypsy-influenced team called the Casual Smokers. His theatrical lyrics, barroom arrangements and bushy, unkempt beard practically beg for descriptors like “gruff,” “raw” and “bourbon-soaked,” but his eclectic, European blues-folk is held together by vocals that channel Tom Jones as much as Waits. Caplan does a more than serviceable Waits impression on the jazzy Conduit and Bang To Break The Drum – not an easy thing to do – but in playing up the obvious influence, he does himself a disservice. He’s actually a versatile performer, switching between suicide ballads (Down To The River), tender breakup tales (Drift Apart) and klezmer murder ballads (Stranger) with aplomb. Almost too much aplomb. Despite the name of his band, Caplan does nothing casually or subtly.

≡ Breaking between guitar, banjo, piano, and melodica, Caplan’s stage show is almost reminiscent of a burly and bearded Freddy Mercury.
≡ Flawlessly mixing banjo, clarinets, violins, beards and vocals into a smoother shot of Canadian Whiskey than ever before, Ben Caplan premier album In the Time of the Great Remembering is a shot of refreshing material.
≡ Caplan’s lyrical genius comes out in songs like “Beautiful” and “Rest your Head,” being some of the softer tracks on the album as well. Songs like “Drift Apart” and “Leave me Longing” contiune on in this tradtion, having a more sombre tone to them. Consider these the “chaser” part of the album.
Songs like “Conduit” and “Stranger” are the scraggly, whisker-like songs of the album, with Caplan howling through the night at the moon. Heftier and rougher than his beard, this is the ‘whiskey’ portion, leaving a sweet burn in your ears after listening. If you combine the Boogie man from The Nightmare Before Christmas and Bourbon whiskey, you’ve got the vocals on these tracks.
≡ There’s no chaser required with this shot, as Caplan manages to combine his harsh, raspy voice perfectly with the music of The Casual Smokers, moving from soft to harsher songs all throughout the album. In the Time of the Great Remembering is like a musical Yin and Yang, the perfect balance between the harsh burn and the softness that comes afterwards.

≡ Ben Caplan is een 25 jarige singer-songwriter die vooral opvalt door zijn imposante baard maar daarnaast heeft de man samen met zijn band The Casual Smokers ook het hele sterke album In The Time Of The Great Remembering uitgebracht. De muziek die ze maken is terug te brengen naar klezmer, jazz, folk en roots en aan die genre’s voegt Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers hun eigen geluid toe dat varieert van ballades die heel folky overkomen tot nummers waarin het belangrijkste handelsmerk de gipsyviolen zijn. De band brengt dan ook niet enkel de meest verfijnde nummers maar ze weten hun muziek ook te laten rollen en stampen. In Canada krijgt Ben Caplan en zijn band al de nodige erkenning maar in ons eigen land blijft hij nog totaal een onbekende. Op een nummer als Southbound doet de band direct uit de doeken dat ze iets folk-achtigs brengen door de violen eerst te laten horen en daarna komen we in contact met het fantastische geluid van Ben Caplan zijn stem die veel doet denken aan Nick Cave. Het nummer is alvast een fantastische introductie tot deze leuke plaat ! Beautiful bevat diezelfde schoonheid waarin de gipsy en de folk de belangrijkste genre’s zijn en Ben Caplan ons meeneemt naar een plek waarin we mogen genieten van de contrabas en de andere instrumenten die hij doet herleven. Seed Of Love is een prachtig duet waarin hij gezelschap krijgt van Sasha Muise die de vrouwelijke zang voor haar rekening neemt. Het nummer komt enorm doorleefd over en met die prachtige begeleiding zit het helemaal ok. Dit is een van die albums waarin hij de rootsgenres omarmt maar hij eveens iets toevoegt aan het genre. Conduit begint heel spaarzaam met een contrabas en een viool en laat dat nu net de twee belangrijkste instrumenten in het oeuvre van Ben Caplan zijn. Maar Conduit is ook een nummer dat enorm doet denken aan Tom Waits die samen iets doet met Captain Beefheart. Deze mix van twee getalenteerde muzikanten maakt het voor ons al een plaatje dat het goed doet maar het is ook  het fantastische nummer waarin hij met zijn diepzinnige teksten iets moois doet. Ook nummers als Down To The River en Stranger weten datzelfde effect vast te grijpen maar het is vooral een heuse prestatie dat hij zo een prachtig album aflevert.
