Editorial Reviews
°  The music recorded by Ernest Greene as Washed Out has been nothing if not dreamy, and on his second full-length, Paracosm, he takes the dreamlike, otherworldly atmospheres of his music beyond the nocturnal, computer/synth-based sounds of their acclaimed debut, Within and Without. With its gorgeous execution and uplifting attitude, Paracosm is primed to be this year's summer record. Paracosm was recorded at in Atlanta with Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Gnarls Barkley, Washed Out Within and Without) at Maze Studios.
°  The music recorded by Ernest Greene as Washed Out has been nothing if not dreamy, and on his second full-length, Paracosm, he takes the dreamlike, otherworldly atmospheres of his music a huge leap further.
°  The title refers to a phenomenon in which people create detailed imaginary worlds, and the idea of escaping is all over Paracosm’s music and lyrics. Paracosm finds Greene reaching beyond the computers and synths that filled Washed Out’s previous recordings, expanding his sonic palette to include over 50 different instruments, the most significant of which turned out to be old keyboards like the Mellotron, Chamberlin, Novatron, and Optigan.
°  “I’ve grown as a songwriter to the point where I want to have more involved arrangements, and that’s really hard to do with sampling,” says Greene. “These machines were kind of a happy medium: The sounds have a very worn, distressed quality about them, much like an old sample. But they also offer much more flexibility because they’re playable.”
°  Following two years on the road in support of the critically-acclaimed Within And Without, and the lauded Life Of Leisure EP (which can still be heard during “Portlandia’s” opening credits), he and his wife, Blair (who plays in the Washed Out live band), relocated from the big-city hubbub of Atlanta to a house outside Athens, where Greene could shut out the real world in favor of an alternate universe of his own making. Listeners will be immediately struck by Paracosm’s seamless melding of organic and synthetic sounds, and its lighter tone. Greene says: “I knew from the beginning I wanted this record to be optimistic, very much a daytime-sounding album. I think the last record felt more nocturnal in some ways. This one I just imagined being outside, surrounded by a beautiful, natural environment.”
°  With its gorgeous execution and uplifting attitude, Paracosm is primed to be this year’s summer record. And it promises to do what its name suggests: take listeners to a better world.
°  Paracosm was recorded at in Atlanta with Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Gnarls Barkley, Washed Out – Within and Without) at Maze Studios.

°  Washed Out's Ernest Greene is back at it, prepping the release of his sophomore album. Paracosm, the follow-up to 2011's Within and Without, is out on August 13 through Sub Pop. The first single will be "It All Feels Right". Other tracks include "Great Escape", "Don't Give Up", "All I Know", "Falling Back", "Weightless", and "All Over Now".
°  This time, he's trying to shake the chillwave chains, using an array of 50 different instruments, plus samples, according to a press release. The album was produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Gnarls Barkley), who also produced Within and Without.

°  It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Ernest Greene, the gloopy Georgia-based synth auteur who records as Washed Out. But his 2011 debut album Within And Without was one of the best things that came out of the whole chillwave movement (even if it did hit stores after that whole thing had already faded). And later this summer, he’ll follow that album up with a new one called Paracosm. On this one, he once again worked with Within And Without producer Ben Allen, probably best-known for Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion.
°  The album’s title refers to the idea of imaginary worlds that people create, and Greene may have created his own world with the album, using more than 50 instruments, as well as samples. The first single is called “It Feels All Right,” but we haven’t had a chance to hear it yet.

Artist Biography by Margaret Reges
°  Ernest Greene had been involved in a number of musical endeavors by the time he started putting together a series of recordings as Washed Out. Leading up to his first Washed Out recordings in the summer of 2009, Greene had worked on a similarly noisy and computerized (albeit far more guitar-heavy and fast-paced) bedroom recording project called Lee Weather. He had also worked on a series of dance music recordings with a local band in Columbia, SC called Bedroom. Washed Out's initial offerings -- drowsy, distorted, dance pop-influenced tracks that brought to mind Neon Indian and Memory Cassette -- would reflect the influence of both of these projects. Mexican Summer digitally released Washed Out's debut EP, Life of Leisure, in mid-2009; the EP was released on vinyl in October of that year. A limited-edition, cassette-only release, the High Times EP, was released on Mirror Universe that September. In 2011, Greene signed on with Sub Pop, releasing his first full-length as Washed Out, Within and Without, later that year.
