Citrus Sun — People Of Tomorrow
∩ Citrus Sun is the brainchild of Jean-Paul Maunick (Bluey) and shows his love for classic British Guitarist Jim Mullen . Their second album ‘People of Tomorrow’ is another fine primarily instrumental Jazz album heavily featuring Jim’s soulful and melodic guitar playing and featuring many members of Incognito including keyboardist Matt Cooper. ‘Mais Una Vez (One more time) ‘ is a lovely easy paced shuffler. ‘Tonight we dance’ and the groove oriented, horn backed ‘Cooking with walter’ are more up tempo. ‘Yesterday Detroit’ is another strong groove track with lovely soft horns in the background. There is a good cover of Marvin’s ‘Whats Going on’ and a nice version of Terry Callier’s ‘What color is love’ featuring Valarie Etienne on vocals.

REVIEW
♦♦♦ Every SoulTracker knows and loves the band Incognito and its founder, Jean-Paul Bluey Maunick. Well Bluey has a lot of things going, and one is a new band called Citrus Sun! Well, not totally new. He did release an album under that name back in 2001, but he'll be back in March with a new line up and a new Citrus Sun album, People of Tomorrow.
♦♦♦ As with the earlier album, the band revolves around the stunning guitar of Jim Mullen (Brian Auger, Average White Band, Morrissey-Mullen, among others). And there are vocals from Valerie Etienne (Galliano, Jamiroquai). But the remaining six members of the band are regular members of the Incognito line-up, including keyboard player Matt Cooper and bassist Francis Hylton.
♦♦♦ Says Bluey: “Citrus Sun is a project born of my love for Jim s playing and the desire to be part of a band with him. We are now good friends and I have collaborated with him on several projects including Terry Callier and Mario Biondi. but as a teenager in the Seventies I was just a fan. He s an amazing musician.”
♦♦♦ Bluey worked as a producer on several tracks with the late Terry Callier and he regards What Color Is Love as an obvious choice for the band to cover. We think it is great, — Soul Tracks.com
♦♦♦ Incognito founder Jean-Paul Bluey Maunick has joined forces with guitarist Jim Mullen to resurrect Citrus Sun. The new, mostly instrumental recording, People of Tomorrow, is available in the U.S. on March 17.
♦♦♦ Bluey elaborates on the light and breezy feel of People of Tomorrow: In terms of sound it is also more sparse as it features the sole trumpet reminiscent of the late Donald Byrd, and there is a cool Latin jazz flavor on some of the cuts. The distinctive sound of Jim Mullen s thumbing guitar brings a tonal quality that is very different to Incognito, but at times it is obvious that this is the Incognito rhythm section and for that we make no excuses, instead celebrating the fact that this is a new project by the same band with me at the helm . — John Hilderbrand at contemporaryjazz.com/

♦♦♦ Citrus Sun is an exciting new jazz project from Bluey, the founder and leader of celebrated UK band Incognito, who have charted on the Billboard Top 10 Jazz Albums eight times.
♦♦♦ Citrus Sun should be viewed as Bluey's alter ego- an eight piece band featuring noted UK guitarist Jim Mullen, key members of the Incognito line-up and vocalist Valerie Etienne. The project is born of Bluey's love for guitar playing of Mullen, who in a 40-year career has played with the likes of Brian Auger, Average White Band, Jimmy Witherspoon and his own pioneering jazz-funk band Morrissey-Mullen. Incognito regulars Matt Cooper (Keyboards), bassist Francis Hylton and drummer Francesco Mendolia are also featured.
♦♦♦ Bluey describes the sound of Citrus Sun as "more sparse as it features a sole trumpet reminiscent of the late Donald Byrd and there is a cool Latin flavor on some cuts. The distinctive sound of Jim Mullen's thumbing guitar brings a tonal quality very different to Incognito, but at times it's obvious that this is the Incognito rhythm section and we make no excuses, instead celebrating the fact that this is a new project by the same band with me at the helm."
♦♦♦ Incognito regulars Matt Cooper (keyboards), bassist Francis Hylton and drummer Francesco Mendolia also feature. A largely instrumental album, including some stunning Latin Jazz tunes, "People of Tomorrow" also features Valerie Etienne (of Galliano and Jamiroquai) on vocals on "What Colour Is Love" and the title track. "Cooking With Walter" is a driving instrumental inspired by the TV series "Breaking Bad".

Artist Biography by Ed Hogan
♦♦♦ Citrus Sun is a smooth jazz group created by Incognito leader/producer Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick. Maunick brought in one-time Average White Band guitarist Jim Mullen and two Incognito members: drummer Richard Bailey, bassist Julian Crampton, horn players Ed Jones, Fayazz Virgi, Dominic Glover, and pianist Tim Vine. Their tight Heads Up debut Another Time Another Space was issued February 27, 2001. Citrus Sun's music is more contemporary jazz-based than the acid jazz leanings of Maunick's other productions with Incognito and Maysa Leak. There's also a looser feel to their music, due in part to Maunick's wish to have more live recording with Citrus Sun as opposed to the more piecemeal method of overdubbing. He also took a more hands-off approach to the album, letting the musicians add their own ideas and putting aside his own perfectionism. Citrus Sun's name was derived from the tonal color of the sun around brunchtime. Several of the tracks have a light breezy feel to them: "Make Me Smile," "Tanya's Song," "Somewhere, Nowhere," and the title track. For good measure, there's the low-toned sax-lead tracks "Buddapest," "Blue Orchid," and the strutting jams "So What Do I Do" and "What It Is."
