★★  Violinist Darol Anger has made his mark on new acoustic music with a number of different groups. From 1975–1984, Anger was a key member of the pioneering David Grisman Quintet, whose blend of folk, bluegrass, and jazz virtually defined the new acoustic genre, as well as advancing the harmonic and instrumental frontiers of traditional musics; as a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet in the late '80s and early '90s, Anger also helped bring virtuosic improvisation and boundless eclecticism to what had been an essentially classical, strictly composed musical format.

★★  Joined by mandolinist Joe Walsh, guitarist Courtney Hartman, banjoist Lukas Pool, and bassist Sharon Gilchrist, Anger leads and is led by this ensemble through ten beautifully evocative instrumentals that give new life to new acoustic music. The program is a balanced mix of original and traditional pieces. Part of what gives this recording its energy is that the originals, for the most part, sound traditional, while the older tunes often contain some inherently quirky twists and turns that make them sound like modern compositions. Anger and Walsh have composed a few of the new pieces, joining numbers from Vassar Clements, John McGann, and John Hartford.
★★  “At this point, my existence seems to be focused on bringing together different generations of musicians,” confesses Darol Anger. The fiddle virtuoso, founding member of both The David Grisman Quintet and the Turtle Island (String) Quartet, creator of the Republic of Strings, and associate professor at Berklee College of Music, has done just that for his newest project. The Anger–designed, multigenerational, and progressive string band supergroup, E–and’a, is comprised of four generations of acoustic musicians: guitarist Courtney Hartman is also part of the Grammy–nominated bluegrass outfit Della Mae, Lukas Pool is a fine Scruggs–style player and two–time National Old–Time Banjo Champion, and mandolin player/co–producer Joe Walsh (no, not THAT Joe Walsh) spent four years with The Gibson Brothers, the 2012 recipients of the IBMA Entertainer of the Year Award. Sharon Gilchrist — the group’s other veteran — has played bass for everyone from The Dixie Chicks to Peter Rowan and Tony Rice. The music of E–and’a is half–curated, half–created, resulting in a track list that builds on American string band history. Vibrant renditions of traditional tunes are complimented by well–chosen covers of songs by late, great geniuses like Vassar Clements and John Hartford. E–and’a pays tribute to the past while ushering in a new era of roots music. ★★  He has performed and taught all over the world with musicians such as Dr. Billy Taylor, Bela Fleck, Bill Evans, Edgar Meyer, Bill Frisell, David Grisman, Tony Rice, Tim O’Brien, The Anonymous 4, Marin Alsop and the Cabrillo Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, Mark O’Connor, and Stephane Grappelli.

★★  Violinist, fiddler, composer, producer and educator, Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres, some of which he helped to invent. With the jazz–oriented Turtle Island String Quartet, Anger developed and popularized new techniques for playing contemporary music styles on string instruments. The virtuosic "Chambergrass" groups Darol Anger's Republic Of Strings, Psychograss, and the long–lived Anger–Marshall Duo feature his compositions and arrangements. His Grammy–nomimated folk–jazz group Montreux was the original musical model for the New Adult Contemporary radio format. The David Grisman Quintet forged a new genre of acoustic string band music with Darol's "fertile inventiveness, surprising touches and technical mastery" (Boston Herald) often in the forefront. On any day, Darol can be heard on NPR's "Car Talk" theme along with Earl Scruggs, David Grisman and Tony Rice.
★★  Working with some of the world's great improvising string musicians, among them Stephane Grappelli, Mark O'Connor, David Grisman, Tony Rice, Bela Fleck and Vassar Clements, has contributed to the development of Anger's signature voice, both as a player and a composer. His work includes recordings, videos, and books of jazz originals and arrangements, and traditional-derived music in many styles.
★★  Anger has produced dozens of critically lauded recordings since 1977 which have featured his compositions and performances.
