Description:
Ξ   Davy Knowles, the name will ring bells yes this is the solo album of the precocious young guitarist from Isle Of Man who was formerly part of the blues–rock band Back Door Slam. Davy is now working as a solo artist and is based in U.S.A gaining a deserved reputation as Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam. Outsider is 14 tracks of a perfect blending of guitar and vocals as he delivers the self–penned numbers with vigour and passion. The words tell a story that are at times introspective, probably autobiographical but they resonate with the listener as they are about striving and life experiences and disappointment we can all relate to.Ξ   The open track Ain’t No Grave, has a haunting desolate intro delivered by resonator and Hammond and then you hear Davy’s gravelly distinct voice for the first time, but this is no maudlin track as the beat picks up and a positive vibe takes over with a foot tapping drumming beat and some great lyrics. Work A Little Harder, perhaps will be many people’s anthem for 2015 this track has a feel of a rock anthem you can imagine this delivered in an arena with the audience screaming back the chorus it has real energy. The tempo changes again with Island Bound, a solo style track vocals and guitar and a storyline that makes you want to sit back and listen. What Doesn’t Kill You; has a different riff and feel and certainly could form part of a motivational track listing as he creates a vocal picture that certainly engages. The title track Outsider has some dirty guitar, melodic Hammond and his vocals have a different tone there is an urgency in this song and despair of being on the outside looking in whether that is physical or a mental state you find yourself in. His song/story skills are at the top of the game as he really captures that fear we all have when we feel outside how when we speak the words catch in our throats. The words fall away and then there is the reflective instrumental closing of the track that real works so well who needs words when you are on the outside.
Ξ   This is an album full of little gems, salient works, delightful riffs and licks and a group of musicians who just want to play and deliver quality music and this is an album like a box of chocolates full of little bits of musical temptation that you just want to listen to.
Ξ   The album is a showcase for the talent as a singer and song writer and blends his influences from Dire Straits to Woody Guthrie and Pastures Of Plenty is his tribute to the great man himself as a bonus track.
Ξ   This is an album that makes 2015 feel like a good place to be as it is full of luscious vibrant sound delivered by Davy and the array of talented musicians that he has gathered around him to create Outsider; this is an album that is right at home in anyone’s collection.                    © Davy Knowles / Photo credit: Gary Weightman (Vannin Photos)
ABOUT DAVY
Ξ   Blues, rock, roots and Americana all have a promising future in the talented hands of Davy Knowles.
Ξ   Just six years into his professional music career, Davy has an impressive record of accomplishments. He has been endorsed by some of the biggest names in the industry, and he has shared the stage and the recording studio with some of his heroes.
Ξ   Born and raised on the Isle of Man (a tiny country located between Ireland and England), Davy fell in love with music making at age 11 when, after hearing the Dire Straits’ classic “Sultans of Swing” on his father’s car stereo, he learned by ear to play it on his father’s guitar. Along with Mark Knopfler, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Peter Green, Eric Clapton/Cream and Rory Gallagher were early, significant influences, and they continue to color his playing and songwriting today.
Ξ   After a relentless tour schedule for the better part of four years in support of his first two albums (“Roll Away” and “Coming Up For Air”), 2013 has allowed Davy to spend more time writing new music and playing select live shows, including a number of intimate, solo/acoustic dates.
Ξ   He joined Peter Frampton, a mentor and the co–producer of his sophomore album, for an August date on Frampton’s Guitar Circus Tour, which included a stirring take on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that also featured the wizardry of Sonny Landreth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z45ePUh4So0).
Ξ   Throughout his career, Davy has been surrounded by great musicians, and he’s made the most of every occasion.
Ξ   He has played opener slots for Warren Haynes & Gov’t Mule, Jeff Beck, the Sammy Hagar/Joe Satriani “super group” Chickenfoot (Satriani has dubbed Davy, “My new favorite modern–day bluesman.”) The Who, George Thorogood, Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He also played a stint as a member of the Rhythm Devils (founded by Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart).
Ξ   Davy’s career has been blessed with some unique opportunities.
Ξ   In 2009, Davy became one of very few artists to have played directly to the International Space Station (ISS) from Mission Control in Houston, TX. He recorded a song to wake U.S. Astronaut Nicole Stott on the morning of one of her ISS missions. Ξ   Both Astronaut Stott and Astronaut Ron Garan have taken Davy’s music with them aboard the ISS.
Ξ   Davy also served as a “bloggernaut” for Astronaut Garan’s Fragile Oasis website. Ξ   For his efforts, Davy was awarded a plaque by astronauts who flew the last mission on the Discovery Shuttle.
Ξ   In 2014, Davy will serve the Isle of Man an official Cultural Ambassador in support of Island of Culture 2014, the biggest cultural celebration in the country’s history.
Ξ   For the past five years, Davy has worked exclusively with Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Guitars. Davy says, “They make the most rock solid, reliable, consistent instruments I’ve ever played, and they require minimal maintenance. The people at PRS are great to work with. Working with PRS, I feel like I’m part of something bigger and greater.”
Ξ   Davy has done several events with PRS and recorded a number of demo videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBLXAMWNZc0). He was also involved in the design process of the very popular PRS Signature limited guitar (http://www.prsguitars.com/2012/signaturelimited/).
