Fabrizio De André — Crêuza De Mä (2014)

ITA Flag      Fabrizio De André — Crêuza De Mä
In 1984 he turned to his native Genoese dialect; in collaboration with former PFM member Mauro Pagani he wrote one of his most celebrated albums, Crêuza de mä ("Path to the sea", the term "Crêuza" actually means a narrow road bordered by low walls, typical of Genoa and Liguria in general). The songs are a tribute to the traditional music from the Mediterranean basin. The album was awarded several prizes and was hailed as "the best Italian album of the 1980s". David Byrne named it as one of his favourite albums, and Wim Wenders said that it was this album that introduced him to the music of De André, whom the director names as one of his favourite artists. As Pagani has repeatedly stated, De Andrè wrote the lyrics for the album, while the music was almost entirely Pagani's.

♦   With the notable exceptions of "Jamin-a" and "Sidún", inspired by De André and Pagani's then-recent trips to Africa and the Middle East, all songs are about Genoa in the 1800s; in particular, "Â duménega" is a jokey song about prostitutes being allowed to walk freely through the streets of Genoa on Sundays, and about the township exploiting the "income" generated by prostitution to pay for the works in the Genoa port; "D'ä mê riva", on the other hand, is a regretful and nostalgic lament of a sailor leaving Genoa for an unknown destination, maybe for good.

♦   A curious, fascinating release, Creuza de Ma was named by none less than David Byrne as one of his favorite albums from the '80s — and, for once, it seems like he really meant it beyond reasons of simple cred-seeking. Creuza de Ma itself isn't in fact an Italian album per se, but a Genoese one, with all lyrics sung in that particular dialect, a blend of Italian, French, and Catalan that's different enough from Italian to require full translations of the words into that language in the liner notes. The sense of distance and a sense of "another place" is further heightened by the subject matter of many of the songs, focusing on historical figures or incidents in the past. Thus, "Sinan Capudan Pascia" tells of a 17th century Italian who became a Turkish general, while "A Dumenega" tells the story of a Sunday promenade by a group of prostitutes. Above and beyond the lyrics, though, is the music, an attractive blend of state-of-the-art instruments and, in de Andre's singing, gently mystic singalongs, with more than a little touch of sea shanties, Mediterranean style. His voice shows both his years of singing and his skill, practiced without being either oily or dispassionate, a quiet, reflective delivery well suited to the sun-baked atmosphere captured in the cover art. As for the music itself, there's a sense of modern clichés being avoided — a song like "Jamin-a" suggests Dead Can Dance's swirl of percussion and trance, a folk dance on electric instruments and with drum machines. Besides the excellent title track, the longest cut on the album and a fantastic introduction, other highlights would have to include "Sidun," with truly haunting and mysterious music and some of de Andre's most captivating singing, and the previously mentioned "A Dumenaga," a low-key danceable delight. Artist Biography by Craig Harris
♦   With the death of Fabrizio De André from cancer on January 11, 1999, Italy lost one of its most modern singer/songwriters. Inspired by the songwriting of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, De André's songs encompassed Genoese folk songs, French protest/social commentary, beatnik "stream of consciousness" poetry, and the soundtracks of Italian film Westerns. A native of the Genoese province of Liguria, De André was born into a wealthy family. His father's criticism of the fascists who controlled Italy caused he and his family to go into hiding in Asti during World War II. ♦   The experience left a lasting mark. Although he returned to Genoa following the end of the war in 1945, he continued to be drawn to political and social issues. Entering university as a pre-law student, De André found music a more effective mode for expressing his views. Having studied violin as a youngster, he found his natural musical voice after acquiring his first guitar at the age of 16. American jazz guitarist Jim Hall served as an early influence. Launching his professional career as a member of pianist Mario DeSantis' jazz band, De André increasingly veered toward more pop-minded genres. Forming a country & western band, Crazy Cowboy & Sheriff Ore, he began writing his own songs about suicide, prostitution, and drugs. His debut single, " Nuvole Barocche," was released in 1958. Scoring his first hit, "Marinella," in 1965, De André released his first album of new material, Tutto Fabrizio De Andre, the following year. He remained seclusive, however, refusing to appear on television and not performing his first concert until March 18, 1975. He continued to maintain a low profile for the rest of his life, rarely appearing in concert. De André attracted international attention when he was kidnapped, along with his compatriot Dori Ghezzi, in August 1979 and imprisoned for four months by Sardinian criminals.
