Graham Nash — Over The Years… (29 Jun. 2018)

Graham Nash — Over The Years… (29 Jun. 2018)Graham Nash — Over The Years… • A teď nechme promluvit Grahama Nashe v jeho rodné řeči: ★⦿★  “It does my heart good to present my songs this way. I hope that listeners will enjoy hearing the demos of my songs — how my demos of ‘Our House,’ ‘Teach Your Children,’ and others turned into the records that have endured ‘Over The Years,’ how I started writing them, and how they became the now familiar recordings when they were released,” říká Nash. ★⦿★  On April 15, legendary musician/songwriter Graham Nash will return with a new studio album, This Path Tonight.
★       Graham’s first LP of solo material since 2002’s Songs for Survivors, the album will feature 10 new recordings written by Graham and with the assistance of producer Shane Fontayne.
★       Here’s the track listing and a preview of the record, which will also have a bonus DVD of live concert footage.                                                                                                           Birth name: Graham William Nash, today OBE

♦≡♦      Rhino looks back at some of Graham Nash’s best~known recordings from the past 50 years in a new anthology featuring more than a dozen unreleased demos and mixes…
≡♦≡      Over The Years is a 30~track collection (curated by Nash and Joel Bernstein) which features highlights from the CSN debut album (Marrakesh Express), CSNY follow~up Deja Vu (Our House, Teach Your Children) and song selections from subsequent CSN albums. Four tracks from Nash’s 1971 solo album Songs For Beginners feature, with Better Days and I Used To Be King presented as unreleased mixes. The most recent recording on the compilation is Myself At Last from Nash’s 2016 solo album This Path Tonight.
♦≡♦      The real interest for collectors will be the second disc in this set which features 15 demo recordings, 12 of which have never been released. Highlights include the 1968 London demo of Marrakesh Express (rejected by the Hollies) and early versions of CSN classics like Our House, Wasted On The Way, and Teach Your Children.
≡♦≡      “It does my heart good to present my songs this way. I hope that listeners will enjoy hearing the demos of my songs — how my demos of ‘Our House,’ ‘Teach Your Children,’ and others turned into the records that have endured ‘Over The Years,’ how I started writing them, and how they became the now familiar recordings when they were released,” said Nash.
♦≡♦      This two~CD set is also incredibly cheap in the UK right now, at just £7.21 which rather makes it hard *not* to purchase it! Update 8/5/18: It’s now £4.99!!
≡♦≡      Over The Years will be issued on 29 June 2018. There will be a 2LP vinyl edition (with an etched fourth side) but this doesn’t feature any of the demos and isn’t due until 31 August. ♦≡♦      http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/

A bargain.
♦≡♦      Graham William Nash, OBE, and erstwhile member of The Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and writer, either solo or as a team, of some brilliant songs, has now decided the time is right to bring out a double CD of his best known work. Complimented by a slew of the same songs in demo form, I’m surprised it’s taken until now to do so. Yes, the songs might be available on ‘Reflections’, but not in demonstration form.
≡♦≡      As with all compilations, we always question why such~and~such a song is missing and why something else is included, but it is what it is and Nash obviously had his own reasons for including what he has. And the dozen unreleased demos (of 15 included here) is the reason most will get this. The first two were taped in Nash’s house in London but the remainder had the benefit of eight~track (and later 16 track) facilities, so sound much better, but there’s something appealing in home taped demos that a recording studio can’t give, though ‘Chicago’ is a powerful song in any form and I think this demo is better than the finished version. It’s also intriguing to hear him comment that he “better rattle them off” at the end of ‘Teach Your Children’. Hmmm, other than ‘Pre Road Downs’ what else was demoed that particular day? Listening to ‘Marrakesh Express’ and ‘Horses Through A Rainstorm’, it makes you wonder why the Hollies turned them down.
♦≡♦      Some may bemoan that these demos weren’t included on that 3CD box set back in 2009, but this double CD is also aimed at the casual buyer, and no one can complain about the bargain price. By the way, disc 1 also contains two previously unreleased mixes of two songs and the booklet contains recording details.
