↵ The current incarnation of Half Moon Run was born tied to the walls of a sweaty room in Montreal’s mile~end district. It was there through the hardships of time constraints and flatlined bank accounts, the trio bonded and manages to fuse together the restless elements of indie with the honest part of warm electronica as they hover tightly against rhythmic harmonies and delicate guitar lines. Addicted to both applause and progression, Half Moon Run is a nightmarishly satisfying experience both live and digitally, and will surely continue to expand.

↵ Richly detailed, alternately rugged and studio slick, the airy and expressive debut album from Montreal’s Half Moon Run is caught somewhere between the pastoral, harmony~laden northwoods folk of Fleet Foxes, the hazy classic rock meanderings of Band of Horses, and the soulful midnight din of Alt~J and Jeff Buckley. Formed via a craigslist ad, the band’s internal anonymity is hardly relative with regard to its cohesiveness, as each track on the brainy yet intuitive Dark Eyes sounds like the sum of its parts, but there is enough space between those parts to suggest a sort of unspoken agreement to avoid any sort of showboating. This predilection for musical mindfulness is best exemplified by album opener “Full Circle,” a carefully tiered, slow~burn brooder that churns along like a river swollen with menace, and then manages to explode without any sort of real violence. The effect is surprisingly and elegantly dramatic, and when Half Moon Run mine this particular cadence, as they do on standout cuts like “No More Losing the War,” “Fire Escape,” and “Give Up,” the latter of which sounds like it morphed out of the early moments of Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android,” they cast a spell that can prove difficult to break free of. That elegance is retained on more mellifluous offerings like the breezy “Call Me in the Afternoon” and the multi~layered, electro~pop~kissed closer, “21 Gun Salute,” both of which lean harder toward the Alt~J side of the equation, but they lack the command of atmosphere and sense of purpose that drive the darker numbers. • http://www.allmusic.com/

¶ Three years after finding each other through a Craiglist ad, Montreal–based folkies Half Moon Run are ready to deliver their debut full~length Dark Eyes. The 11~song set, which follows their self~titled 2011 EP, will come out March 27 through Indica/Outside.
¶ A press release explains that the trio of multi~instrumentalists — Devon Portielje, Conner Molander and Dylan Phillips — deliver ‘60s~style, three~part folk harmonies that hover above “moody, psychedelic arrangements and electronic~infused soundscapes.” You can see the group do their thing in the new video for first single and Dark Eyes lead~off cut “Full Circle”.
¶ Half Moon Run also have some tour dates lined up this spring, including some performances at Canadian Music Week in Toronto before jet setting over to Europe.

¶ Half Moon Run est un jeune et talentueux trio originaire d’Ottawa, Ontario et de Comox en Colombie~Britannique. C’est dans un studio de pratique situé dans le quartier musical du Mile~End de Montréal, surmontant les contraintes de temps et les comptes bancaires gelés, que le groupe a développé son esthétique musicale unique.
¶ Fusionnant les éléments d'indie, de rock, de pop et de folk avec des lignes de guitare délicates et un soupçon de musique électronique, le trio nous insuffle une brise de modernité sur des mélodies exquises.
¶ Âgés de 20 à 25 ans, armés d’une solide formation et d’un talent brut, ils mélangent et combinent leurs divers horizons musicaux. Leurs arrangements complexes, inspirés autant par les grands compositeurs classiques que les plus modernes sont particulièrement surprenant à voir et à entendre durant leur spectacle live. La voix de Devon Portielje est à un niveau rarement vu sur la scène indie et est soutenue superbement par Conner Molander et Dylan Phillips. Phillips joue de la batterie et du clavier simultanément, pendant que Molander et Portielje se partagent les guitares, échantillonneurs, claviers et percussions. Des harmonies recherchées, aux accents folks, soutiennent les envolées psychédéliques et mélancoliques du trio.
¶ Ensemble depuis moins de deux ans, Le trio a déjà séduit les publics du Transmission, du CMW et de M pour Montréal en 2011, ils ont ouvert pour le duo indie~électro~pop Phantogram sur leur tournée québécoise, ont été proclamés par Mark Monahan (directeur du Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest) de “plus gros buzz autour du festival” et de “Buzz Kings du Festival (M pour Montréal)” par NME.
¶ 2012 démarre avec des invitations au CMW, à SXSW et à The Great Escape au Royaume~Uni. Half Moon est présentement en train de finaliser l’enregistrement de leur premier album à paraître au Canada à la fin mars 2012. S’ensuivra une une longue tournée au Canada, aux Etats~Unis, en Europe, en Australie et en Chine.
