♠   It’s a cliche to compare every male Australian singer with a deep timbre to Nick Cave, but there’s something appealing in the idea of a Cave in cowboy boots — an alternative–universe country Cave who found redemption not in gothic post–punk but in winding tales of high melodrama and the twang of Nashville guitar.
♠   Meet Henry Wagons, a musician Justin Townes Earle has described as “Dr Seuss meets Conway Twitty”.
♠   After more than a decade of touring and recording with his band Wagons (Cave, in fact, co–produced their 2014 album Acid Rain and Sugar Cane), Henry is releasing a solo album — an autobiography of songs that spans his life so far, from a rowdy misspent youth to a stint as a tour–hardened troubadour, to his latest role as a new father.
♠   To record After What I Did Last Night…, Wagons headed to Nashville, the home of country music, where he worked with producer Skylar Wilson. “So many of my favourite albums have been made in Tennessee with sort of pick–up studio musicians,” Wagons says.
♠   “And over my many years of going there, I’ve gotten drunk enough at bars there to have met some great musicians. Basically, it was great to be able to rock up and do the same process as so many of my favourite albums, from [Bob Dylan’s] Blonde on Blonde to [Neil Young’s] Harvest.”
♠   Wagons says he’s hooked on the city. “Good burgers on tap, fine bourbons and American accents, Southern gentlemen, kind manners and long stories,” he says. “I suspect I’ll be over to the States again to record one day soon.” ♠   http://www.theguardian.com/
AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine;   Score: ****
♠   After What I Did Last Night, the title of Henry Wagons’ second album, bears the unmistakable remorse of a hangover — or, at the very least, it feels as if the singer knows perfectly well that he owes an apology to somebody, possibly more than one person. Given that undercurrent of regret, it comes as a surprise that After What I Did Last Night plays rather defiantly, with Wagons doubling–down on his down–under Americana. He can still evoke the ghosts of Johnny Cash and Nick Cave — the latter is an especially apt comparison, considering that they’re both Australians enamored of gothic Americana — but Henry Wagons writes on a smaller scale than either and he also shows a facility for playing around with his arrangements, brightening “Santa Fe” with an ‘80s electro pulse, and flirting with kitsch on “Cowboy in Krakow.” This mischievousness contrasts well with both his heavier tunes and his ability to slide into a soulful groove (“As Long as I Breathe”), and helps turn After What I Did Last Night into a sharp, savvy, satisfying neo–roots record.
Artist Biography by Heather Phares
♠   The leader of Australia’s raucous country–rockers Wagons, Henry Wagons also explored the dark side of Americana as a solo artist. While his band released several critically acclaimed albums in Australia and made their U.S. debut with 2011’s Rumble, Shake and Tumble, Henry Wagons started his solo career almost by accident. When the band completed its Rumble, Shake and Tumble tour, Henry fell ill upon returning to Melbourne. Instead of resting up, he wrote songs. After recording most of the music in his own studio, he recruited a who’s who of guest vocalists — including the Go–Betweens’ Robert Forster and the Kills’ Alison Mosshart — to sing Lee Hazlewood–inspired duets with him. The results became 2013’s mini–album Expecting Company? The live EP Upstairs at United 9 — which was recorded at Nashville’s United vinyl pressing plant — also arrived that year. The Wagons band returned in 2014 with Acid Rain and Sugar Cane, a set of songs featuring the Bad Seeds’ Mick Harvey as co–producer. For 2016’s full–length solo debut After What I Did Last Night..., Henry Wagons traveled to Nashville to work with producer Skylar Wilson and some of the city’s most respected Americana musicians. ♠   http://www.allmusic.com/
