♣   I was thinking out loud to myself a few weeks ago, wondering if I Monster was planning on releasing new music any time soon. So I Googled ‘em and found out that they do indeed have a new album — Swarf — and it’s availible to stream/download off Bandcamp.

• I Monster was born in 1998. The gentlemen responsible are Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling. They specialise in a sort of left field psychedelic, new wave, electronic pop, sort of. Up to now the band have released three albums. Notable feathers in their caps are hit 'Daydream In Blue' and 'The Blue Wrath (theme from 'Shaun Of The Dead'). Their music is used in countless TV shows across the world.

The best way I can describe I Monster, a duo from the UK comprised of producers Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling, is if The Beatles and The Beach Boys made music in modern times on shrooms and/or acid. Or, you can allow the twosome to spell out their sound for your themselves — “left field psychedelic, new wave, electronic pop, sort of“.

•   I, Monster is a musical behemoth, a visionary throwback to the psychedelic recast in the now. Trippy, tuneful, and textured, this British duo create beautifully intricate songs that are equally balanced in the production and songwriting departments.
•   Active for quite some time, the group has a fair sized discography under its belt. The fact of their experience is evident as each track spins out in a solidly constructed and well–paced manner. The 1975 aim to create ‘alternative pop’; I, Monster seems to create something like ‘alternative electronica’, which is a stupid way of describing their music, but it works somehow.
•   For a group that is so electronically influenced and prone to samples, there is a melodic sensibility at work that is downright surprising. For an example of this listen to ‘Checkou Luv’ or ‘Food For the Sea’ — these sound like something Bowie might have tossed out into the world during his Hunky Dory era. The diatonic, chord–progression driven melodies and keyboard vamps almost possess a naive quality, in a way that is refreshing in its unfettered simplicity.
•   In good English underground music fashion, there are plenty of keyboard squelches and studio effects. At times, as on ‘Hey You Beautiful Land’, there is something of the spirit of Syd Barrett at work in the music, some early Pink Floyd–esque sensibility that shines through. What is interesting about the structure of ‘Hey You’ is that it possesses a quality of being an introduction to the next track, ‘She Sucks’. When ‘She Sucks’ kicks in, the mood totally changes. With this, belief in the bands unique genius is reinforced.

•   Célèbre pour leur musique de pub, c’est au travers d’un 4eme album toujours entre pop et électronique que I monster nous revient. Le duo composé de Dean Honer et Jarrod Gosling creuse son sillon propre à l’écart des styles et courants musicaux actuels. Impressionnants.
•   C’est par « Early morning Robert » que débute « Swarf » et l’on sent de suite cette folie créatrice qui ne nous lâchera pas de tout l’album. En effet, débutant sur une pop très standard et pétillante, I Monster y intègre moults sons trafiqués et électro vintage sans parler de ce génial break typé très funky Bee Gees. Non décidément on a faire à un OVNI qui au travers de ce premier titre entraînant et plein d’énergie brille de milles paillettes.
•   Mais à l’écoute de « Colourspill », on se dit que finalement on a peut-être loupé quelquechose tellement le fossé semble important d’avec le premier titre. En effet, beaucoup plus calme et rappelant Air dans ce côté pop planant et transformé, le morceau tranche.
•   Mais finalement avec « Checkout luv » l’on comprend que décidément cet artiste est inclassable. Impressionnant dans sa structure et ses arrangements, le titre ne semble souffrir d’aucune faiblesse. Tour à tour fanfare Beatles « The Holy Man », pop chorale, électro chaleureuse, voire proche de Queen, les anglais se dévoilent en bidouilleur de génie, en Georges Charpak du son.
•   Car ce qui caractérise le groupe est bien cette facilité déconcertante des anglais à disséquer un style et à en importer dans leur morceau la partie nécessaires à la production de leur son. Mélangeant la pop des Beatles avec l’environnement sonore de Queen, Madness ou Supertramp dans un grand feu d’artifice joyeux sur « Food for the sea », les anglais sont aussi capable de titres plus noirs tels « She sucks » et « Magic Man » où électro et rock à la fois, les grands bretons prouvent encore une fois leur polyvalence et montrent le côté proteiforme de leur musique. Au travers d’une maîtrise impressionnante et une créativité toujours débordante, les anglais nous servent sûrement leur meilleur titre.
•   Véritable centrifugeur de style, le duo nous sert une musique inclassable et surprenante, mélange continu et permanent entre courant musicaux. « Swarf » sent bon l’album socle sur lequel viendront dans les années à venir se réclamer nombres d’artistes.
•   Au travers d’une maîtrise indéniable de l’arrangement et de l’expérimentation électro, I Monster semble se jouer des différents styles pour mieux en créer un nouveau : le sien.
