--------------------------------------------------------------------Singer songwriter Jeneé Halstead releases her third album ‘Raised by Wolves’
Spooky stripped-down folk-rock socks it to us.
¶  Singer songwriter Jeneé Halstead releases her third album ‘Raised by Wolves’, which is a remarkable feat in improvisation – mixing traditional instruments, banjos, mandolins and ukuleles with a subtle blend of electronic blips and wheezes.
¶  ‘Raised By Wolves’ is haunting and beautiful, Halstead’s vocals are cold and clear as snow as they cut above the sparse instrumental arrangements. It’s a sign of a powerful song (let alone an entire album) when it stops you in your tracks just so you can get a good listen.
¶  Halstead hails from the high desert of Spokane, Washington, and was raised by hippie parents. Her influences range from Medieval choral works to Dolly Parton, and more obvious references to the likes of PJ Harvey and Kate Bush (never a bad thing!). ¶  Her free spirit shines through on Raised By Wolves'. One has to wonder whether the album title was semi-autobiographical?
¶  As an album, 'Raised by Wolves' is eerie, almost like a spell being cast. It’s not an easy listen, but it is curious and intelligent. Halstead sings of obsessive love, loneliness, supernatural nature and all things beyond. Her silky, seductive vocals flip from being delicate and vulnerable to worldly and knowing. They go down like dark red wine, leaving the listener punch drunk. And all this is set against the delightful sparseness of the instrumentation.
¶  It’s a spooky, atmospheric and delightful album that evokes snowy, dark images of the winter months to come. What could be finer?

¶  Jeneé Halstead weaves thoughtful lyrics and honeycoated vocals with a soul that reaches beyond her years. Her talented alto projects strength and tenderness, heartbreak and jubilation, as the listener is swept along through well crafted stories in an updated Americana style with recognizable roots in the earliest American Folk traditions.
¶  With heroines like Emmylou Harris, June Carter and Patty Griffin, Jeneé Halstead is poised to make her mark in a scene that is experienced renewed interest around the world.
¶  Halstead grew up in Washington State, a singing tomboy with a restless heart. Her father is an avid music fan who surrounded her with the best of American rock.
¶  In The River Grace, Jeneé Halstead puts forth a collection of songs effortlessly suited to her voice, mixing dobro, mandolin, and upright bass with vintage Casio keyboards and subtle electronic beats. From catchy yet subtle “Before I Go” to the tragic balladry of “Darkest Day,” The River Grace’s sound is rooted in the past yet beckons the progression of Americana.
¶  The River Grace was recorded and produced by Evan Brubaker with whom Halstead plans to collaborate further. Jenee is joined on this album by keyboard wizard Steve Moore (Bright Eyes, Laura Veirs, Mount Analog), dobroist Mike Grigoni (Anaïs Mitchell), mandolinist Zak Borden (Willy Mason), and bassist Matthew Weiner (Asylum Street Spankers). The River Grace also features background vocals by a host of her most esteemed peers including Rose Polenzani, Holly O’Reilly, and Monique Lanier.
