■♠■ John Parish, kytarista, stejně jako široce uznávaný producent, skladatel a inženýr zvukových stop, byl pro Polly Jean Harvey nezbytnou pravou rukou po čtvrtinu století. Sama kdysi řekla: „John mě naučil všechno o hraní na kytaru”. A Eels k tomu připojil: „John Parish — správný Angličan, který ví, jak hrát rock”. Sólové album nevydává každou chvíli, naposledy to bylo Screenplay (2013), ale není to člověk, který by o tom mohl mluvit příliš hlasitě. Album Bird Dog Dante bylo vytvořeno výslovně během spolupráce na dalších projektech, kterých je až doposud 49. Například zpěvačka Aldous Harding zaznamenala své vokály k písni Rachel na iPhone, zatímco čekala na šatně s Jools Hollandem. Parish produkoval její album a také v tom samém roce i album Nadine Khouri. Bird Dog Dante je zhruba rozděleno na popové a instrumentální písně. Jednoduchým vrcholem první kategorie je píseň Sorry For Your Loss, psaná pro P.J. Harvey, kde také zpívá. Hudba je jemná a tichá, ne na rozdíl od tvůrce, a její útlum přichází díky své emocionální hloubce a jemného potěšení ze zvukových možností a zpracování. Je to o jejich lítostivém příteli (Mark Linkous, nar. 9. září 1962 Arlington, Virginie, USA ~ 6. března 2010 Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, Sparklehorse). Toto se nezdařilo ani v The Hope Six Demolition Project. Jinak Johnovy nedávné sólo nahrávky byly instrumentální a většinou zahrnovaly skeče vytvořené pro film. Zároveň jsou to jeho první písně orientované na celovečerní album za téměř deset let. Když má Parish vyzpívat refrén hlasitěji, je se svým suchým hlasem trochu krátký, i když i jeho skromné kusy své kouzlo mají. Instrumentální práce jsou bez výjimky krásné, např Let’s Go. Okouzlující Buffalo se zdá být vyprodukováno pro alternativní western a Kireru zní jako od The Bad Seeds. Zde je úvod podobný konceptuální skladbě Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Vkusná produkce a zvuková estetika, ušlechtile pojaté tajemství, které jsou někde uprostřed mezi Bad Seeds a Tindersticks, jsou pomyslným můstkem, spojkou, či vzpomínkou na tomto poněkud fragmentárním albu, na kterém je spousta krásy. Pro někoho zřejmě může být druhým vrcholem píseň Rachel. Tu si můžeš zpívat spolu s nima jako karaoke. John je výjimečně zkušený umělec s mladistvou radostí, tvůrčí a otevřenou myslí, stejně tak se schopností mistrovsky rozvíjet a gradovat tyto myšlenky. / The sun never felt colder, PJ Harvey sings in Sorry for Your Loss, which is dedicated to the songwriter Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, who committed suicide in 2010. •→√•→ Producer, songwriter, and multi~instrumentalist John Parish has spent the 2010s scoring independent films and recording soundtracks, and producing for others, from PJ Harvey (whose road band he directs), Rokia Traore, and Jenny Hval to Tom Brousseau, This Is the Kit, and Aldous Harding. Bird Dog Dante is his first proper vocal album since 2009’s collaboration with Harvey on A Woman a Man Walked By and his own Once Upon a Little Time. The two soundtrack projects issued since, She, A Chinese (2010), and Screenplay: The Film Music of John Parish (2013), have nonetheless informed this wonderfully weird venture. Parish wrote and recorded these songs in a variety of locations, often while on the road, in keeping with his long established aesthetic M.O. He covered the seams in this approach (somewhat) by mixing it all in a ten~day session between bouts of touring with Harvey's extended band in support of her Hope Six Demolition Project.
•→√•→ While traveling, Parish often ran lyric ideas past Harvey. One such exercise was undertaken for this set’s first single, “Sorry for Your Loss,” a song dedicated to the memory of their mutual friend Mark Linkous who took his own life in 2010. Upon completion, Parish decided it would work best as a duet as the pair deliver it here — its lyrics and melody directly relate to the deep, isolating depression that plagued Linkous. •→√•→ Its eerie electronic whine is answered by a slightly de~tuned strummed banjo (a favorite instrument of Linkous’ and one he used often), as Jeremy Hogg’s stinging, gated guitar underscores the refrain: “The sun never felt colder/The window rattled and I wondered if you’d just passed over….” Hogg and Parish deliver the oddly tender and utterly ironic “Type 1” — a paean to diabetes — as a duo. “Rachel” is delivered as an early rock & roll song in duet with Harding, while Parish plays everything else — including trombone. The cinematic element follows in four consecutive tunes, the suspenseful “Buffalo” contains a buried~in~the~mix chanted choral vocal with a full band, and “Kireru” is delivered via three keyboards playing oscillated drones that open onto church~like passages, as Hogg’s spiky guitar adds a layered, trebly spaghetti western feel. Parish takes it solo on piano and electronics for “Le Passé Devant Nous” and “Carver’s House.” The former is a minimal sketch whose elemental white noise is as much a part of its structure as the inquisitive keys; the latter’s skeletal piano is answered by field recordings and a rhythm created from an unidentifiable sample. For all its moodiness, Bird Dog Dante closes on the sunny tip with the hooky, lo~fi pop of “The First Star,” with its earworm chorus and striated vocal harmonies between Parish and keyboardist Marta Collica. While it’s unlikely that Bird Dog Dante will win him many new fans, its curious, intimate, casual approach will certainly appeal to those who have embraced Parish’s earlier — and no less idiosyncratic — recordings.

Zo af en toe maakt hij een soloplaat, maar hij is er de persoon niet naar om daar veel lawaai over te maken. Bird Dog Dante kwam letterlijk tot stand terwijl hij aan zijn andere projecten werkte.
•→√•→ Zo nam Aldous Harding haar achtergrondzang in Rachel op een iPhone op terwijl ze met Parish in de kleedkamer van Jools Holland zat te wachten. Bird Dog Dante valt grofweg uiteen in popsongs en instrumentaal, soundtrack-achtig werk. Makkelijk hoogtepunt van de eerste categorie is het met Harvey gezongen en geschreven Sorry For Your Loss, over hun betreurde vriend Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse). Dat had niet misstaan op The Hope Six Demolition Project. Als Parish vocaal de kar moet trekken, komt hij met zijn droge stemgeluid wat tekort, al hebben de bescheiden opgezette stukken zeker hun charme. Het instrumentale werk is zonder uitzondering fraai. Het bezwerende Buffalo lijkt gemaakt voor een alternatieve western en Kireru klinkt als The Bad Seeds die het intro van Shine On You Crazy Diamond spelen.
