But For All These Shrinking Hearts

Josh Pyke — But For All These Shrinking Hearts (31 July 2015)

Josh Pyke — But For All These Shrinking Hearts  (31 July 2015)  Josh Pyke — But For All These Shrinking Hearts (31 July 2015)•   Singer–songwriter se stále zlepšuje ve vyváženosti pracovního života, to však neznamená, že zlenivěl.

•   The time, seemingly, has come for Josh Pyke to cross–over from triple j to Double J as his fifth album arrives. It’s not a slight against him — or, indeed, any of the multiple artists who see their key audience shift with age. Rather, it is merely indicative of an artist knowing what works best for them and keeping within their immediate comfort zone.
•   But For All These Shrinking Hearts is a simple, pleasant affair. It’s a comfort blanket, some warm reassurance and a bit of tea and sympathy. To label it boring is somewhat unfair — after all, whoever looked to Pyke for an adrenaline rush? Still, beyond a couple of hookier moments, it’s a pretty standard fare as we’ve come to expect — there’s schmaltzy–husband Pyke (‘Be Your Boy’, ‘Someone to Rust With’), wandering–soul Pyke (‘Late Night Driving’, ‘Hollering Hearts’) and faux–philosophical Pyke (‘When Your Colours Go’, ‘Momentary Glow’). If that works for you, you’re home and hosed. If you seek a little more depth, however, you’d do best to look elsewhere.  ••   http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/By Meg Crawford, Updated on 30 Jul 2015.
•   The singer–songwriter is getting a better handle on work–life balance, but that doesn't mean he's ever going to be a slacker
•   Josh Pyke’s fifth studio album, But For All These Shrinking Hearts, is a beautiful and triumphant indie release, with lyrics that are pretty damn sad.
•   Relationships feature strongly in just about every tune, but Pyke’s focusing mostly on their demise. Pyke has a happy marriage and two lovely kids, so what drove that? “There’s a lot about crossing lines and relationship challenges on the album, but, looking back I realised that a lot of it is about my relationship with creativity,” he says.
•   Specifically, Pyke is addressing the tension between his creative life and the harmony of home. “It’s hard to find a balance,” he says. “It’s hard sometimes when you get caught up in promo cycles and when you tour too much, but my relationship with creativity is the longest relationship I’ve ever had — in some ways, it’s what defines me.”
•   Songs like ‘When Your Colours Go’ reflect that, but it’s not all a tug of war — Pyke’s feeling chipper about what happens next. “Part of making this album was all about falling back in love with the process [of music making],” he says. “The last album was called The Beginning and the End of Everything and it felt that way — it was like a door had closed on a chapter and I’m now moving into the next phase of my relationship with creativity.”                                © Josh Pyke, Films, Video Clip Make Happy
•   Going back to the fact that Pyke has his own kids now, would he discourage them from going down the creative path given the difficulties it can pose? “I’m not going to discourage them from doing anything,” he says. “But I will definitely push the line that they need to have something to fall back on more than my parents did, bless them. They had that hippie generation attitude of ‘you can do anything and everything will be fine,’ but that’s not necessarily the world we live in anymore. Years ago, this guy said to me, ‘even if you have to pack boxes, you should pack them the best’ and I’ve always lived by that. I have a strong work ethic and I want them to have that too. I want them to work and try hard and when they think they’ve tried their hardest, I want them to try a bit more — that’s what I do.”  ••   http://www.au.timeout.com/
