Julie Byrne Not Even Happiness

Julie Byrne — Not Even Happiness (January 13, 2017)

Julie Byrne — Not Even Happiness (January 13, 2017)Julie Byrne — Not Even Happiness (January 13, 2017)★↔★  Intimní písně o životě na cestách. Jakoby hudba a světlo měly nějaký těžko rozšifrovatelný kodex. Podobný způsob nahlížení na svět už měl na přelomu 18. a 19. století spisovatel Charles Neville Buck. Vpravdě ryze klasický přístup, nikdy nevycházející z módy. Julie Byrne zachytila úžasné dílo, přetavila ho do svých písní a zachránila ho od zapomnění. Skvělá zimní alba nemusí nutně vyjít v zimě, ale pomáhá, když vyjdou. Objevilo se právě včas. Gramofonová deska pro rozjímání. Byrne vyrostla v Buffalu, jednom z nejbezútěšnějších a nejnehostinnějších měst ve Spojených státech. Má zkušenosti kočovníka nejméně šesti velkých měst (Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Northampton/Mass., Chicago, Seattle, New Orleans a New York) a teď pracuje jako park ranger v Central Parku. Definitivní důvod, proč ji věřím. Je totiž pouličně chytrá a má v sobě více punkie ducha, než hledání hippie ideálu. — BT //  “Julie has a way with words and singing which create longing in the listener for things unknown. Her voice carries a heavy weight of emotion which guides the listener to her frame of mind, as intimately as though they were their own feelings. The backdrops of ambience and orchestral instruments in this album blend perfectly with the closeness of Julie's voice and guitar, creating a masterpiece of an album, much more polished, but no less unique and refreshing than her debut.” — Jan Kučera

Notes 1/Press:
•   Vinyl is 180g heavyweight. Digital download included.
•   Julie Byrne’s second album Not Even Happiness adds atmospheric instrumentation and electronic flourishes to her unusual guitar tunings and fingerpicked melodies, moving the songs from the front~porch into subtle anthemia.
•  “The songs of Julie Byrne are hushed and mysterious... that conjure up a simultaneous feeling of warm cabin intimacy and a deep interior sadness.” ~ MOJO
•  “otherworldy and other~timely...for all its dreaminess, it never seems fey or contrived... stunning” ~ The Guardian
•  “Very fine female folk... has the same casually lost but so what vibe of the genre’s classics. Beautiful Stuff” ~ The Wire
Notes 2:
•   Julie Byrne, who recently moved to Seattle from Chicago, crafts elegant, deliberately wrought songs that chronicle memory, hope, and loss using finely crafted lyrics and complex fingerpicked guitar run through delay. The somber, dreamlike quality of her songs is similar to a stripped~down Grouper, with restraint and measure in her deep, unusual vocal timbre.
•   Julie’s first recording for Orindal was a 7” called “Faster Or Greener Than Now”. It was produced by Owen Ashworth & was released on December 4, 2012. Her debut album, Rooms With Walls and Windows collects twelve tracks from two limited edition cassette releases, recorded between 2011 & 2012 by Jake Acosta in Chicago, IL. Each song was recorded live, with Julie accompanying herself on fingerpicked acoustic guitar.
Review
Tim Jonze, Thursday 12 January 2017 22.00 GMT / Score: ****
•   Julie Byrne might not make for the most reliable tenant ~ her restless side has seen her move home countless times in recent years (Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Seattle, New Orleans … you get the picture). But life on the move has made for interesting music, in which double rainbows (Follow My Voice), breaking dawns (Natural Blue) and even the dye made from crushed beetles (Melting Grid) serve as lyrical inspiration. This second album might not hang together were it not for the fact Byrne herself appears immersed within the worlds she sings about ~ there’s something pleasingly organic about the way she almost seems to exhale the melodies. Songs such as All the Land That Glimmers Beneath are reminiscent of Jackson Browne’s finger~picked songs for Nico, but there’s an otherworldly glaze of synth that drifts over the likes of I Live Now As a Singer, adding to the unique and intimate atmosphere.
