Julie Doiron — „I Thought of You“ (26 nov., 2021)CANADA emoji                                                                                      Julie Doiron — „I Thought of You“ (26 nov., 2021)
Ve světě Julie Doiron se vše propojuje, od přijetí její elektrické minulosti až po zahájení nové a energické fáze sólové kariéry s některými z nejvzrušivějších a nejinspirativnějších písní osobní nahrávací kariéry.
Julie Doiron je zpět s I Thought Of You, její první sólovou nahrávkou od „So Many Days“ z roku 2012. Každý kousek okamžitá klasika, kterou dokáže mistrovsky vytvořit pouze ona. Julie Doiron oplývá vyzařující sílou s kytarou a svým nezaměnitelně nezdolným hlasem. Výsledné album „I Thought Of You“ je návratem, protože Julie Doiron nachází cestu zpět s novými písněmi, které uchvátí naše srdce a zároveň nachází cestu zpět k sobě. „Žijeme pro tyto chvíle, kdy naši nejdražší přátelé najdou cestu zpět do míst, které milují, a my znovu slyšíme, jak se jejich hlasy vrací zpět do našich životů. Je to Juliin hlas, který se nám hned od začátku zvedá vstříc. Otvírák alba „You Gave Me The Key“ nás vítá v pro ní typické písni, kde s radostnou rezignací oznamuje „tady jsem, začínám znovu“. Titulní skladba „I Thought Of You“ je šmrncovní jam, okamžitá klasika. Jak se pohybujeme na konci desky, v „Darkness To Light“ sdílíme oduševnělou baladu, přemítající o přechodu z temných dnů do světlejších odstínů. V „Back To The Water“ zpívá Julie jemně „I’ve been here before“ a jsme tu opět spolu. „I Thought Of You“ je návratem dechu a ohně Julie Doiron a my máme to štěstí, že jsme se ocitli zpět v objetí jejích něžných a mocných sil.
Julie Doiron is back with I Thought Of You, her first solo record since 2012’s So Many Days. Every bit an instant classic as only she can masterfully create, Julie Doiron emanates a radiative force with her guitar and her unmistakably indomitable voice. Julie Doiron is a maker of songs and a teller of stories, wielding her instruments like a craftsperson would their tools.Julie Dorion
In her time away from the solo spotlight she has remained entwined with music, albeit in consortions with others; releasing a critically acclaimed record with members of Cancer Bats and Eamon McGrath under the name Julie and The Wrong Guys, reworking some of her previous work in Spanish for Spanish label Acuarela and returning to her otherworldly collaboration with Mount Eerie for Lost Wisdom pt 2, to name but a few. These are additions to Julie’s long and storied history of collaboration, working with luminaries like Gord Downie, Herman Dune, a split record with Okkervil River, and the unforgettable and iconic Eric’s Trip, the first Canadian band ever signed to legendary American record label Sub Pop.
Ever the bountiful songwriter, Julie had been writing songs in the 9 years since her last solo record, keeping them close and waiting for it to feel right to head back into a studio. When the time came, she enlisted close and trusted friends to collaborate in the process: the uber~prolific and multi~talented Daniel Romano, superstar drummer Ian Romano, and Quebecois songwriter Dany Placard on bass. Together the quartet retreated to a cabin in the woods to record Julie’s first solo offering in 9 years. The resulting album, I Thought Of You, is every bit a return, as Julie Doiron finds her way back with new songs to enthrall our hearts, while simultaneously finding her way back to herself. We live for these moments, when our dearest friends find their way back to the places they love, and we once again hear their voices rise back into our lives.
It’s Julie’s voice that rises to meet us from the get~go. Album opener “You Gave Me The Key” welcomes us in, a quintessential Julie Doiron song where she announces with a joyful resignation “here I am, starting over again”. Title track “I Thought Of You” is a rolling twang~tinged Doiron jam, an instant classic. As we move towards the tail end of the record we share in “Darkness To Light” a soulful ballad ruminating on moving our way out of dark days and into lighter shades. On “Back To The Water” Julie sings over gently plucked strings “I’ve been here before” as she has, and so have we, and we are once again here together.
I Thought Of You is a return of the breath and fire of Julie Doiron and we are lucky to find ourselves back in the embrace of her tender and powerful forces.Julie Doiron is back with I Thought Of You, her first solo record since 2012’s So Many Days. Review

ψ   Anyone familiar with Julie Doiron’s work ethic knows that, just because she hasn’t put out a proper album in a moon’s age, doesn’t mean she hasn’t been busy. Since her last full~length, 2012’s So Many Days, the Moncton singer~songwriter founded a couple of supergroups, recorded another album with Mount Eerie, and re~recorded some of her material in Spanish.
ψ   Maybe this is why her ninth solo LP, I Thought of You, finds the three~decade vet sounding wonderfully revitalized and well~worn. Compiled from songs Doiron wrote across the last decade (including several previously released numbers), these 13 songs meld several eras throughout her career, both musically and emotionally. Tracks like “Thought of You” (from her Greville Tapes EP in 2016 with Nancy Pants) and “How Can We Keep Laughing” stand out due to Doiron’s ability to deliver heart~wrenching lyrics overtop crashing instrumentation — courtesy of her starkly plucked playing and a rough~edged backing band that includes Dany Placard on bass alongside brothers Ian and Daniel Romano on drums and guitar, respectively. Opening number “You Gave Me the Key” conjures up Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s dusty vulnerability, while the sweet, angular re~recording of 2019’s “Run” is floated by Doiron’s stop~start melodies and echoed guitars.
ψ   Once you begin to compare her re~recorded tracks with the originals, it become clear just how stimulating and energetic Julie and her band sound on her latest LP. This is best demonstrated by how the docile and sparse acoustic number “Cancel the Party” (originally from a 2003 split single with Okkervil River) is transformed into a thumping, brash rocker, while “Good Reason” (also from Greville Tapes) gets a paisley underground redux, complete with aching slide guitars.
ψ   Doiron’s newly written tracks included here are just as sonically absorbing, as the vibrating, jammy “Just When I Thought” allows listeners to virtually feel the atmosphere of the room it was recorded in. But when Doiron wants to convey a certain emotional and lyrical gravity that defined albums like 2001’s Désormais and 2002’s Heart and Crime, she’s able to push her vulnerable and tender voice to the front, as demonstrated by the melodic “How Can We” and the prairie~ready on “Darkness to Light.”
ψ   On I Thought of You, Julie Doiron defends her crown as indie rock royalty, giving listeners yet another full~band classic that equals her material with the Wooden Stars and even Eric’s Trip.
