±±±   RELEASED as “ELV034” in the end of 2013:
±±±   P.W. ELVERUM & SUN, ltd. box 1561 Anacortes, Wash. U.S.A. 98221
Note: the first and last tracks are organ compositions previously buried within other songs, totally analog, totally rich, made audible here as complete and penetrable pieces of music.
±±±   This is an unusual release for Mount Eerie for many reasons. Here are some of them:
±±±   overtly recorded on a computer (as opposed to the customary extreme 100% analog style)
±±±   pretty weird human portrait on the cover (as opposed to a non-personal place-focus)
±±±   totally synthetic voices, digitally garbled (as opposed to legible and literate human tones)
±±±   no new songs (as opposed to the perception that Mount Eerie is “prolific”)
±±±   there is no such thing as a difference between “nature” and “not nature”, it is all wild
Description:
±±±   "Last year, Phil Elverum released two Mount Eerie records: Clear Moon and Ocean Roar. This year, he’s releasing an album called Pre-Human Ideas, where he re-recorded tracks from both of those albums with Auto-Tuned voices. It’s out November 12 via his own P.W. Elverum & Sun label.
±±±   These are strange computer recordings of pre-existing Mount Eerie songs made post-album-release as exploratory and instructional demos to teach the songs to various touring bands. What’s new here are the added layers of severely pitch shifted and autotuned voices singing newly written lyrics, almost like new songs layered over the old ones, expanding and clarifying the ideas. These songs keep growing, and here they are given new life in cascading walls of MIDI instruments and Phil Elverum’s voice digitally posing as a hoarse woman or a rough older man. These are strange tones. An alien wonder enters the room."

REVIEW
Andy Fenstermaker September 23, 2013
±±±   Phil Elverum’s penchant for the unconventional has always been a recognizable trait of his work. I would argue that all his work under the Mount Eerie moniker is unconventional; there are, however, times where it stands out even more. His latest release, a forthcoming one titled Pre-Human Ideas out on his P.W. Elverum and Sun imprint November 12, is one of those times.
±±±   A look at the creative is the first sign that something here is different. Elverum himself is on the cover, as is his computer — Mount Eerie cover art typically features a surreal-looking place photograph or drawing.
±±±   A look at the track list is the second sign: these are familiar names, ones we’ve seen in the recent past. Pre-Human Ideas consists of predominantly pre-released Mount Eerie tracks, reworked, but not in a way you’d expect.
±±±   Last year, Mount Eerie gave us two releases, Clear Moon and Ocean Roar. Following these releases, he put out a 7″ single. The A-side features all tracks from one of the albums played simultaneously atop one another, and the B-side featured the same from the second.
±±±   This is not one of those releases. This is a different kind of re-working: more digitized, and entirely auto-tuned. What started as “exploratory and instructional demos to teach the songs to various touring bands” (per the press release) ultimately expanded to include wildly pitch-shifted and auto-tuned vocals. Elverum’s voice is unfamiliar and electronic; on one hand he sounds feminine, on the other an elderly, deep-voiced male fond of cigarettes.
±±±   Instrumentation is not always the same, either. In some cases stripped-down and more minimalist (the opening and closing tracks have been pared down to their respective, previously buried organ tracks), in others revisited entirely (“Yawning Sky”).
±±±   Pre-Human Ideas is beyond interesting. Familiar favorites including “House Shape”, “Lone Bell” and “The Place Lives” become favorites in a new light. Some are calming, subdued tunes somewhere in the surreal lands between mesmerization and paralyzing terror. Others, like closer “ORGANS (the Place Lives)” have a deep sadness to them, once hidden and now exposed.
±±±   Any fan of Mount Eerie should be able to appreciate what Phil Elverum has done here. After all, it is in the unconventional where he is often at his most creative. (http://www.fensepost.com/)

Artist Biography by Heather Phares
±±±   Mount Eerie After the release of the Microphones' 2003 album, Mount Eerie, Washington state songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Phil Elverum took that title as the name of his subsequent project, which expanded on the searching feel of the Microphones' music. He founded the label P.W. Elverum and Sun Ltd., releasing a pair of CD-Rs, Seven New Songs of Mt. Eerie and Mt. Eerie Dances with Wolves/Wolf Mountain Howls in the World in 2004 before Mount Eerie's debut album, No Flashlight, became the label's first official Mount Eerie release in 2005. A CD/LP set with a poster that holds the record for the world's largest album cover, No Flashlight set the tone for Mount Eerie's further, intricately packaged releases, which were prolific; they included The Drums from No Flashlight, Singers (which featured different vocalists singing Elverum's songs), and the electronic-tinged 11 Old Songs of Mount Eerie, all of which also arrived in 2005.
±±±   Black Wooden A Microphones single, Don't Smoke/Get Off the Internet, and Mount Eerie, Pts. 6 & 7, a picture disc and book of photographs (and sequel to the Microphones album that started it all) and the Latitudes Series offering Black Wooden were issued in 2007. ±±±   Released in 2008, the Black Wooden Ceiling Opening EP introduced Elverum's concept of playing "black metal with natural materials" and featured a different version of "Don't Smoke." Later that year, the concert DVD Fog Movies Live and a split single with No Kids preceded Lost Wisdom, a collaboration with Eric's Trip and Broken Girl singer Julie Doiron and guitarist Fred Squire. Dawn, a journal/CD set written during Elverum's stay in Norway in late 2002/early 2003, arrived in spring 2009, while a full-length of new material, the ambient and black metal-inspired Wind's Poem, was released that summer. Elverum maintained the flurry of activity with White Stag, a CD-R recorded in Portland, Oregon, and 2010's singles compilation Song Islands, Vol. 2. Mount Eerie resurfaced in 2012 with a two-album concept project: Clear Moon, which was recorded in a de-sanctified church, arrived in May, while Ocean's Roar followed that September. Live in Bloomington, September 30th, 2011, which featured radically reworked versions of Wind's Poem and Clear Moon songs, arrived in mid-2013.
