Overview
Ξ Nitin Sawhney is one of the most distinctive and versatile musical voices alive today. Firmly established as a world-class producer, songwriter, DJ, multi-instrumentalist, orchestral composer and cultural pioneer, Sawhney has become a latter-day Renaissance man in the worlds of music, film, videogames, dance and theatre.
Ξ Sawhney’s output as a musician is astonishing. He has scored for and performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, and collaborated with and written for the likes of Paul McCartney, Sting, The London Symphony Orchestra, A.R. Rahman, Brian Eno, Sinead O’Connor, Anoushka Shankar, Jeff Beck, Shakira, Will Young, Joss Stone, Taio Cruz, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Ellie Goulding, Asa, Horace Andy, Cirque Du Soleil, Akram Khan, Mira Nair, Nelson Mandela and John Hurt. Performing extensively around the world, he has achieved an international reputation across every possible creative medium.
Ξ Often appearing as Artist in Residence, curator or Musical Director at international festivals, Sawhney works tirelessly for musical education, acting as patron of the British Government’s Access-to-music programme and the East London Film festival as well as acting as a judge for The Ivor Novello Awards, BAFTA, BIFA and the PRS foundation. He is a recipient of 6 honorary doctorates from British universities, is a fellow of LIPA and the Southbank University, an Associate of Sadler’s Wells, sits on the board for London’s Somerset House and in 2007 turned down an OBE for ethical reasons.
Ξ "Music is born, lives and dies. Vinyl gets that across in a way that the digital world never can."
Ξ An astonishing 35 years after the last live, direct to vinyl mainstream recording, Nitin Sawhney rises to the challenge with his brand new past, present and future unplugged album OneZero. This retrospective was cut live to vinyl with his phenomenal band and special guest Joss Stone, and also features four brand new tracks. Uncompromised by the safety net of post-production editing, multi-tracking or modern sound correction techniques, Sawhney — boldly daring to go where no major artist has gone since 1978 — recorded seventeen songs from his back catalogue and forthcoming album, as old school as it gets, direct to disc before a live audience at Metropolis Studios on April 6th 2013.
Ξ Entitled OneZero to commemorate nine studio albums to date (with a tenth — Dystopian Dream — due next year) this extremely limited edition of 1000 deluxe vinyl boxsets was released by Metropolis Recordings on Monday 24th June. OneZero features the entire performance across five Vinyl LPs (cut live simultaneously with Nitin's performance), and the deluxe boxset also features a CD version of the recordings, exclusive bonus session material across a further CD and on vinyl, a deluxe 24-page booklet featuring stunning artwork from renowned artist Paul Benney and a short film on DVD about the making of OneZero, along with three full-length performances from the session.
Ξ Nitin Sawhney presents a 17 song career retrospective, re-arranged for his virtuoso nine piece band and recorded live to vinyl at Metropolis Studios. Packed with career highlights, and featuring four new songs, 'OneZero' was recorded live in the studio on April 6th and simultaneously cut to vinyl lacquers.
Ξ The album also features 'I Ask You', a new collaboration with Joss Stone. This box set features nine sides of vinyl pressed using the live cut masters, plus exclusive selected listening notes, where Nitin discusses the evolution of some the recordings. It also includes the album on CD, and a second CD of outtakes and ‘making of’ material, as well as a 24pp 12” book, featuring artwork by Paul Benney (Artist-In-Residence at Somerset House), session images and notes.
Ξ An exclusive DVD is also included in which Nitin discusses the project and the challenges in delivering the performance, as well as performance footage and an insider’s view of the preparations and rehearsals. Features 'Nadia', 'Letting Go', 'Homelands' and 'Tides' from the classic 'Beyond Skin' album, and four brand new tracks including the forthcoming single 'Accept Yourself'. 'I Ask You' features Joss Stone.

REVIEW
By Helen Brown; 4:41PM BST 15 Jul 2013; Score: ****
Ξ One of this year’s broadcast treats has been the new Radio 2 show Nitin Sawhney Spins The Globe. Enthusiastically and unsnobbishly eclectic in his tastes, the prolific producer and composer brought the concept of Radio 3’s great Late Junction to the masses, easily breaking down the apartheid between "world music" and more mainstream rock and pop. Offering likable insight into a range of genres, he played Radiohead back to back with Malian ngoni maestro Bassekou Kouyate, and followed a Ravi Shankar raga with the jazz-pop of his daughter Norah Jones.
Ξ As a polymath musician, he blends jazz, pop, soul, classical, electronica and rap from a coolly-turned kaleidoscope of cultural backgrounds. His work (which includes over 50 film and TV scores as well as collaborations with Paul McCartney and Sting) has placed the fiery strum of flamenco guitar into the controlled laboratory conditions of ambient electro and provided thoughtful social commentary via a concept record featuring a spoken-word monologue from John Hurt.
Ξ This April, Sawhney invited 100 fans to come and see him and his band perform highlights from his career, plus four new songs from an album due later this year at Metropolis Studios — an ex-power station in Chiswick. The whole thing was recorded straight to vinyl — in a process so technically intricate and musically transparent that apparently no artist has risked it since Thelma Houston & Pressure Cooker recorded I’ve Got The Music In Me in 1975. As the team from Metropolis explain: “Synchronised, simultaneous live performing, mixing, mastering and cutting of the record eliminates all scope for hiding behind modern production techniques... Once we start to cut the lacquer, there’s no going back!”
Ξ The result is a characteristically fluid combination of virtuosity and mellowness with production that’s impressively warm and sharp. It opens with a new song, Accept Yourself: Sawhney plucking a tumbling, folk-blues riff from his guitar as a trio of female vocalists harmonise and a jazz flute wafts about. From there we drift dreamily through his back catalogue. The arrangements are relatively minimalist and the highly skilled band put their hearts into it. The voices of Nicki Wells and Ashwin Srinivasan float like silk over the tabla on a gorgeous rendition of Nadia (from 1999’s Beyond Skin). Joss Stone adds easy-going soul to the piano-based R&B of another new number, I Ask You. Nobody really lets rip, though. Sawhney’s sound is too philosophical and accommodating for that. He lays out his songs like beautiful floor cushions for you, so you can lie back and let your mind wander beyond its own borders.
