Peter Bruntnell — Ringo Woz Ere (2012)

Peter Bruntnell — Ringo Woz Ere
¤   Peter Bruntnell is another musician who has featured on my blog. He must be the epitome of the great underappreciated artist. It seems that every year he brings out an album of wonderfully crafted songs all of which seem to disappear with hardly a trace. ¤   I for one am glad he persists. Ringo Woz Ere is his strongest album for a number of years as he reverts back to simpler production arrangements, allowing his songs more room to breathe.
¤   Devonian singer/songwriter Peter Bruntnell continues to amaze with his ever changing approach to his art. Latest release 'Ringo Woz Ere' features rare alternative versions of recent and new songs as well as covers of some classics.

Description:
¤   "The latest album from Devon based singer/song- writer Peter Bruntnell, Ringo woz ere, following on from last years excellent Black Mountain UFO.
¤   The usual high standard expected of Mr Bruntnell is maintained, there are seven tracks co-written with Bill Ritchie including two great reworked versions of tracks that appeared on Black Mountain UFO, Maryanne and Looking for Allison (with James Walbourne playing twelve string and bottle neck guitar) there’s one other Bruntnell original and a great selection of covers including wonderful Going Back (Gerry Goffin and Carole King), love the way it fades towards a close then opens back out again (beats The Byrds version hands down).
¤   Reaching back to the 60′s again there’s a take on The Beatles Think for Yourself from the classic on The Beatles Think for Yourself from the classic Rubber Soul album and on the subject to classic albums Bruntnell picks a track from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Five Years to close the album, add in Second Lovers Song from the legend that is Townes van Zandt and you have a wonderful mix of the borrowed, old and new."

REVIEW
BY SIMON, ON APRIL 8TH, 2012
•  Seems ages since I’ve had the pleasure of catching a Peter Bruntnell live performance,  so I’ll have to make do with his recorded output and the good news is there’s a new album out following on from last years excellent Black Mountain UFO you can pick up the CD Ringo Woz Ere direct from the man himself here.
•  The usual high standard expected of Mr Bruntnell is maintained, there are seven tracks co-written with Bill Ritchie including two great reworked versions of tracks that appeared on Black Mountain UFO , Maryanne and Looking for Allison (with James Walbourne playing twelve string and bottle neck guitar) there’s one other Bruntnell original and a great selection of covers including my favourite on the album the wonderful Going Back (Gerry Goffin and Carole King),  love the way it fades towards a close then opens back out again (beats The Byrds version hands down).
•  Reaching back to the 60′s again there’s a take on The Beatles (George Harrison) Think For Yourself  from the classic Rubber Soul album and on the subject to classic albums Bruntnell picks a track from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Five Years to close the album, add in Second Lovers Song from the legend that is Townes van Zandt and you have a wonderful mix of the borrowed, old and new.

BIO/PRESS:
•  NME claimed that "Peter Bruntnell's records should be taught in schools" and with 9 studio albums under his belt and countless high-profile fans picked up along the way (including Rumer, REM’s Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner and Son Volt’s Jay Farrar and more recently John Murry) it’s about time one of the UK’s most consistent songwriters released a career retrospective.
•  It all started back in 1995 when Peter signed to Almo Sounds, where his label-mates included Gillian Welch and Garbage. He made two albums for the label: Cannibal and Camelot in Smithereens. Grammy-winning Peter Smith (Sting/Squeeze) who produced the debut Cannibal still cites it as “one of the top 3 records I’ve worked on”.
•  In 1999 Peter signed to Warner Brothers imprint, Slowriver/ Rykodisc and released ‘Normal For Bridgwater’. This was to be his biggest commercial success and a record that won him wider acclaim in North America. Upon hearing the album, Kathleen Edwards told her producer when recording her debut ‘Failer’ “I want to make an album like this”. Peter struck up a friendship with Son Volt, which resulted in them touring together. It also saw the introduction to Peter’s band of a 17 year-old James Walbourne. As well as playing with Peter, James tours as a member of The Pretenders.
•  Rather than reproduce the Americana feel of Normal For Bridgwater, Peter’s restless musical spirit has seen him strike out in new direction with almost every subsequent album. Four albums for Loose continued to win him admirers - by 2005, The Independent were calling him “one of the finest songwriters in Britain” and Richmond Fontaine’s front man Willy Vlautin called him his favourite singer.
•  His most recent release for Loose was 2009's ‘Peter And The Murder Of Crows’. Filled with psychedelic drones and mellifluous tunes, the album found reviewers and fans alike comparing him with Nick Drake and John Martyn. It was one of Q magazine's Albums Of The Year and was an Americana Album Of The Month in MOJO Magazine.
•  Ever inventive, with his latest 2011’s ‘Black Mountain UFO’ Peter mixed West Coast harmonies with the requisite dab of psychedelia.
•  And now, 2013 sees the release of ‘Retrospective’, featuring tracks from all of Peter’s albums to date and crowned with a re-recorded version and video of ‘Played Out’ featuring platinum-selling Rumer. This will be the radio single off 'Retrospective'.
•  "Bruntnell has a remarkable knack for turning out big, dreamy, melodic, memorable songs" Mojo
•  "His songs are warm and beautifully radiant" — Uncut
•  "One of the finest songwriters in Britain" — The Independent
•  "His songs should be taught in schools" — NME
•  "One of England's best kept musical secrets" — Rolling Stone
•  "I love Peter Bruntnell. His voice is like a textured Elliott Smith with great songs. Will spread the word in Ohio!" — Lisa Walker of Wussy
•  "Gig of the Year when Peter Bruntnell and full band headlined the 2012 Palmfest" — Del Day Ark PR

Bio appendix:
¤   Bruntnell's family is originally from Wales; His family moved to New Zealand when his father, Owen Bruntnell, was sent to work at the British High Commission in Wellington for four years. They returned to the UK when Bruntnell was a year old, and settled in Kingston upon Thames. His great great uncle was Australian politician Albert Bruntnell who emigrated from Wales in 1888. Bruntnell also lived in Vancouver, Canada for a time. In the early 1990s, Bruntnell returned to the UK and formed the band Milkwood, although he soon reverted to solo work and recordings with Matt Backer and Felix Harper as the Peter Bruntnell Combination. He was signed by Almo Sounds, who issued his debut album, Cannibal, in 1995. He recorded a second album for Almo, Camelot in Smithereens (1997), before moving to the Slow River label for his 1999 album Normal for Bridgwater. The album was highly recommended by VH1's Bill Flanagan and by Rolling Stone's John Luerssen, and helped to establish Bruntnell with American audiences. The album was recorded with the help of musicians from Son Volt, a band with whom he has toured regularly in the United States.
¤   In 2013, Loose Music released Peter Brutnell's Retrospective album, featuring music from all Peter's albums to date. The album was preceded by a single and accompanying video of a re-recording of the song "Played Out", featuring Rumer.
¤   Peter is married to Tanya Chesworth. They have three children — Molly, Ralph and Jake.
