♦    V roce 1942 pověřil Aaron Copland Marthu Graham (May 11, 1894 ~ April 1, 1991) a Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge (30 October 1864 ~ 4 November 1953), aby vytvořili balet s americkým tématem.
♦    Pro současný kus jsme obdrželi zkušenost s novou prací a talentem choreografky Andrey Giselle Schermoly; vedoucí tanečnicí Natalií Ashikhmina, Robem Morrowem, Lexou Daniels, Markem Kriegerem a 13 dalšími členy Louisville Ballet.
♦    „The Way Forth“, nová folková opera od Rachel Grimes zahrnuje svěží vrstvy hlasů a orchestrací v experimentální nelineární rešerši/investigaci zdůrazňující pohled na ženy z Kentucky od roku 1775 do současnosti.  Když Grimes hraje „The Way Forth“ živě, vokální umělci sedí v kruhu, zatímco sestřihy filmu od Catharine Axley koloruje obrazy venkovské historie.
Album kombinuje zpívané a mluvené skladby, obě mají elegantní strunovovou a full~bandovou instrumentaci. Účinek je zcela odlišný od předchozích sólových alb Rachel Grimes, ale melodie klavíru jsou stále nepochybně její vlastní.
♦     Grimes, inspirovaná pokladem rodinných dokumentů, fotografií a dopisů pokrývajících několik generací, začala v roce 2016 zkoumat některé z nepříjemnějších otázek, které se objevily na povrchu těchto míst a událostí. Písně tvořící scenérii „The Way Forth“ se vplétají zpět v čase prostřednictvím pohlednice, osobního prožitku dlouhého života na farmě, stop lidových melodií, jmen, míst a řek, vše zapletené do emocionální struktury touhy, nostalgie, zármutku a bohaté intimity každodenního života. Sólové hlasy zpočátku nad živými orchestracemi vyčnívají rozšiřujícími se sborovými hlasy komunity prostřednictvím fragmentů tradiční církevní hudby a populárních melodií. Rozsah se rozšiřuje tak, aby zahrnoval úvahy moderního mužského vypravěče o místě, které je otřeseno chamtivostí, občanskou válkou, bigotností a zneužíváním přírodních zdrojů. Prostřednictvím hudby, hlasu a filmu ctí „The Way Forth“ emocionální odkaz umlčených, holistického přístupu, krás v životě koček zkoumá věčnou milost a vykoupení času, které symbolizuje velká řeka Dix a Kentucky.

Review
Erin Lyndal Martin, Nov. 1, 2019
♦     On The Way Forth, Rachel Grimes (formerly of the band Rachel’s) brings her gifts as a pianist and composer to a new folk opera about Kentucky history. As Grimes pored over deeds and other documents from her home state, she mainly noticed what was missing: the accounts of women. Grimes filled in those spaces by inventing Kentucky women who lived from 1775 on and giving them stories. The album alternates between sung and spoken~word pieces, both featuring elegant string arrangements and full instrumentation. The effect is quite different than on Grimes’ previous solo albums, but the piano melodies are still unmistakably hers.
♦     The cast manifests these narratives in spoken~word segments performed over lush string arrangements. In “Patsy,” an 85~year~old woman looks back over her life, including the three wars she’s seen. Patsy details the tasks of weaving flax, shearing sheep to make wool blankets, and more. She also gives her history of church membership, a way of doing autobiography that’s been especially persistent in the South. The narrator of “Nowhere on Earth” is touring places of her past, wondering if it’s “blood, bone, or DNA” that embeds her town so deeply in her as she watches the river shake the treeline. The slave narrative of “Dolly” leads starkly into the choral glossolalia of “Bill of Sale.”
♦     Though the characters are fictional, the essence of their stories is real, but Grimes is never precious about their presentation. The voices sound like “regular people,” and they don’t even attempt to make commentary or lament that their voices have been marginalized. Instead, the music behind the monologues is where the dreamy pathos lives.
♦     In the sung pieces, Timbre Cierpke’s wistful soprano nails the sense of longing that permeates The Way Forth. “There Is No Other” is an understated tearjerker, Cierpke’s voice floating above orchestral flourishes and piano melodies. Other songs are upbeat, like the fiddle~driven “The Hysterical Society,” which features ensemble vocals and lyrics mostly listing names and places. “Fontaine Ferry” moves between delicate piano and a honky~tonk carnival barker, again featuring the whole cast on vocals.
♦     When Grimes performs The Way Forth live, the vocal performers sit in a circle while a movie by Catharine Axley montages images of rural history. The intimacy of that performance, combined with the faraway~seeming visuals, further emphasizes the humanity of the past and the impossibility of returning there. And as listeners ponder what we lost in the years, we wonder whose voices we’ve lost as well.

Description:
♦     The Way Forth, a new folk opera from Rachel Grimes, encompasses lush layers of voices and orchestrations in an experiential, non~linear investigation highlighting perspectives of Kentucky women from 1775 to today.
♦     Inspired by a treasure~trove of family documents, photos, and letters spanning several generations, Grimes began in 2016 to research some of the more vexing questions that came to the surface about these people, places, and events. Fueled by intuition, travel to visit family, photographing, and filming present day rural Kentucky life, the research led to many more questions: What is missing? What is not being said here? What did she really think and feel? Primary historical accounts routinely glossed over people without titles or voting rights, and dehumanized most others by referring to them as objects of desire, savages, or slaves. Further examination formed a framework for trying to reconcile her state’s history and how it relates to the westward expansion and settlement of the United States and ultimately how an era of domination, denial, and pain is reflected in the complex culture of today.
♦     The songs that make up The Way Forth weave back in time through a postcard, a personal account of a long life on a farm, traces of folk tunes, names, places, and rivers, all woven into an emotional fabric of yearning, nostalgia, grief, and the rich intimacies of everyday life. Initially solo voices are heard above vivid orchestrations, expanding with the choral voices of the community through fragments of traditional church music and popular tunes. The scope widens to include a modern male narrator’s reflections on a place battered by greed, civil war, bigotry, and the exploitation of natural resources. Through music, voice, and film, The Way Forth honors the emotional legacy of the silenced, the holistic, the beauty in quotidian life, and explores the eternal grace and redemption of time, as symbolized by the great Dix and Kentucky Rivers.
♦     Instrumentation includes piano, harp, strings, choir, lead vocals and narrators. Special guest collaborators include Stephen Webber (SITI Company), Timbre Cierpke (SONUS), Joan Shelley, and Nathan Salsburg. Experimental film created in collaboration with Catharine Axley.
♦     Rachel Grimes is a composer and pianist who creates music for chamber ensembles, orchestras, film, and collaborative live performances. Her work has been performed by ensembles such as the Louisville Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, A Far Cry, Longleash and the Dublin Guitar Quartet. Recent works include the soundtrack The Doctor From India (2018), The Blue Hour (with Shara Nova, Caroline Shaw, Sarah Kirkland Snyder and Angelica Negron, commissioned by A Far Cry, 2018), Through the Sparkle (with astrïd on Gizeh Records 2017), The Clearing (Temporary Residence, 2015), Book of Leaves, Marion County 1938, If Then Not When with King’s Daughters & Sons (Chemikal Underground), and numerous albums with ground~breaking indie chamber group Rachel’s.
