•★• Band z New Jersey, jehož mlhavý styl indie~rocku a dream~popu mísí uvolněné fintičky a svěží melodie s psychedelickými vlivy. Nyní, po deseti letech svého působení v kapele se přestěhovali od písní o příměstské malátnosti a večírcích se štěnetem piva k přemýšlení o smyslu existence a cyklu života. I když by to mohl být příliš vážný buzzkill, Real Estate na albu The Main Thing půvabně vyrůstá, zatímco si pevně drží to původní kouzlo a talent s nízkými tóninami, díky nimž vynikají. V jiných písních je nálada méně reflexní a znepokojivější, odkazující na toxicitu, atomové hřiby a pohou iluzi kontroly civilizace. Temné spodní proudy bojují se sladce doplňovanými melodiemi v celé stopáži The Main Thing, což má za následek kultivaci jedné z nejsložitějších nálad. Píseň Paper Cup složili Alex Bleeker / Real Estate / Matthew Kallman / Julian Lynch / Martin Courtney / Jackson Pollis. The Decemberists nepřekonávají. Občas je to vše příliš zamlžené. Například Silent World z D strany se vznáší na jemné, středně temné kytarové linii, Martin Courtney tiše zpívá úmyslně eliptické linky o „vědění toho, co nevíme“, snad odkazuje na Donalda Rumsfelda..., a smyčcové kvarteto mu poskytuje vkusnou podporu. A pak se to zase unáší a zanechává v paměti ty nejnebezpečnější otisky, jako když se probudíte z mimořádně světského snu o nákupu zubní nitky. Je to pravidlo spíše než výjimka u alba přetíženého umělecky vyleštěným tediem.

Poprvé v éře Geralda Forda, podruhé za George W. Bushe. Donald Rumsfeld je znám tím, že si během kariéry sestavoval žebříček pravidel důležitých pro úspěšné řízení. Některá pravidla sám vytvořil. Jednou z prvních věcí, které vždy udělal při příchodu do jakékoli nové funkce, bylo, že aktuální verzi seznamu rozdal svým nejbližším spolupracovníkům a podřízeným.

•★• Real Estate are one of those bands that it might take a few listens for their intricacies to truly register. You might start thinking this is just another indie group with clean guitar tones and wistful vocals. But that’s when the nimble lead guitar parts, knack for melody and strong lyricism catch your attention, and remind you how effective this band’s songwriting is.
It’s a sound that Real Estate have honed over the last decade through various personnel changes, and a sound that remains as strong as ever on their latest record.
•★• Real Estate’s biggest strength has always been how well they function as a unit. They’re able to take a number of seemingly simple parts and build unassuming, yet complex, nuanced and textured arrangements. The intermingling of guitars and keyboards on “Also A But,” and the nuanced, laidback arrangements on “Shallow Sun” provide effective proof. The band’s textured songwriting approach is also as strong as ever, as the dream~pop undercurrent that’s made for some of their strongest work is as present as ever.
•★• There’s no elegant showmanship to be found on this record (or in their catalogue for that matter). This is a band that know how to not waste notes, and construct their songs in the most effectively economical way possible. The Main Thing is a warm, inviting record that slots nicely into the band’s catalogue, and should reward fans of the Real Estate’s understated yet powerful songwriting. — Exclaim
