Editors’ Notes
•   An alt–rock institution finds sure footing and fresh starts with producer Danger Mouse. For a big–ticket band, the Chili Peppers remain appealingly stripped–down, mixing their lean, punky approach with disco (“Go Robot”), golden–age hip–hop (“The Getaway”), psychedelia (“This Ticonderoga,” “Detroit”), and slow–burning funk (the Elton John–featuring “Sick Love”). As with the rest of the band’s post–Californication phase, the sound remains rhythmic (credit the skeleton–key wrecking crew of Flea and drummer Chad Smith) but the mood is melancholic, introverted, and a little lovelorn — the reflections of party boys reckoning the bittersweetness of middle age.

•   Despite the major changes Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone through over the past few years — including the departures of guitarist John Frusciante and longtime producer Rick Rubin — their latest album, The Getaway, remains true to their unmistakable sound.
•   Working with producer Danger Mouse has allowed the California greats to explore an almost–but–not–quite–commercial direction, while still showcasing Anthony Kiedis’ passionate vocals and Flea’s slapping bass lines. The Getaway is definitely on the mellower end of their spectrum, featuring breezy acoustic guitars and piano sections, but their funkiness keeps it all from skewing too far into full–on balladry. If the success of their new singles (“Dark Necessities” and the LP’s title track) speaks to anything, it’s that fans won’t be let down by the Chili Peppers’ latest.
