Reighnbeau — Hands (May 1, 2014)

United States                          Reighnbeau — Hands
Ξ»   Alchymista shoegaze, melancholické elektroniky a jižního rapu. Pomalý hořák s propadlými vokály a stagnujícím tempem. No, něčeho u mne dosáhl.
Působí to na mne filmově ale ne Feničovsky. Není až tak strašidelný a nočněmůrovský jako Ricardo Donoso. Vytáhl mne skrz podlahu až na půdu.

Ξ»   Hands is part of the spring batch of cassettes from Bridgetown Records based on Reighnbeau’s evolution in sound, starting with their 2012 LP Ashes. There, they mixed a shoegaze and “downer rock” aesthetic, with a cavernous, menacing atmosphere, but relied mostly on acoustic instrumentation.
Ξ»   Later that same year, on a one–off single, “Splinters” (which also appears on Hands), the band started to embrace heavily delayed electric guitar, creating a woozy, codeine–drenched sound — an idea that seems to have served as the blueprint for this most recent effort, all while dialing back some of the inorganic, synth–heavy sounds dabbled with on last year’s “Water,” a track contributed to the Family Time label’s 4–way split 7” EP.
Ξ»   Mixed appropriately low, and jumbled into the fold, frontman Bryce Fletcher’s spidery, whisper–thin vocal delivery becomes like a secret you are on the verge of hearing, but can’t quite make out, adding a bit of mystery to the songs on Hands. Musically, this can all be considered “shoegaze,” but throughout the eight songs, Fletcher varies the style within the genre–there are slow motion, dream pop moments (“Run With The Woundedd” and the somber as hell “Echo”), but then there are more aggressive and abrasive songs as well — like the double shot of “He” and “Saltwoundd” that arrives near the end.
Ξ»   Never short on creating the feeling that you’re in a dream about to turn into a Lynch–ian nightmare, Hands is nothing short of a triumph for Reighnbeau. Claustrophobic, murky, yet incredibly unintimidating at the same time, it works some kind of balancing act by being very accessible, luring listeners into the hazy, gorgeous yet unsettling, shoegazey layers found within.

Ξ»   When I first came across Reighnbeau‘s music I was a little confused. His Soundcloud page includes some truly stunning downbeat dream pop but there’s also some left field remixes of Rihanna, Mariah Carey (and a brilliant Twin Peaks Bootleg). I thought it must be two different people. But no, this is the colourful world of Albuquerque’s Bryce Hample. Self described as “an alchemist of shoegaze, melancholy electronica and southern rap”. And also as a hybrid of trap music and shoegaze. I’m still confused, but what I do know is that the latest eight track release ‘Hands’ is very impressive.
Ξ»   ‘Splinters’ was released previously (as a single) but also serves as the album opener. It features guests Shane Brown and Emma Crane (of Javelina). The combined guy/girl vocals are hushed and barely distinguishable. It’s otherworldly and really beautiful. Reighnbeau had me at ‘Splinters’. Another stand out is ‘Echo’, a slow burner with sunken vocals and a sluggish pace that’s feels like it wants to pull the listener through the floor. It’s also a good summary of what ‘Hands‘ has to offer. While there’s vocals in the mix, it almost works like an instrumental piece. Cinematic and ambient throughout. If you’re looking for something a little different, this chilled out collection could be your answer. A quiet achiever in many respects.
