Φ   Rough Trade Exclusive and a magical release. We are the only place to have this release so fill your boots and don't forget the instores in London, Nottingham and Bristol. Ten brand new seasonal tracks from Smoke Fairies, exclusive to Rough Trade shops. Smoke Fairies (Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies) had this to say about their album: “We got together with our band, played around with the songs a few times then headed off to the studio to record them all live. It's buzzy and raw and not one tinkling of sleigh bells can be heard.”
Φ   Smoke Fairies, the indie UK band led by Londoners Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire, release their fifth studio album, the seasonally themed Wild Winter on December 8 via Full Time Hobby Records.
Φ   “We have a love/hate relationship with winter and the Christmas holiday,” say Davies and Blamire. “When it was suggested Smoke Fairies make a Christmas album the last thing we wanted to do was make a classic, jolly, celebratory album that can only be played once a year. Sometimes winter provides us with a sense of togetherness and love and sometimes it leaves us feeling alienated, cold and playing a glockenspiel alone in a darkened room. It’s part of the year that will always be bittersweet and wild. This was the inspiration behind the record.”

Φ   From the Smoke Fairies website: “We’ve spent the last few months delving in childhood memories of Christmas, pondering the cold dark days of winters past and considering what it was really like to be one of the 3 magi to create our new album, ‘Wild Winter’, which is to be released by Full Time Hobby in conjunction with the lovely folk at Rough Trade shops who have made it their album of the month for December.”
Φ   “By complete fortuity, track number 3 is called the 3 Kings and is 3.33 minutes long. To add to the 3 love and festive cheer we will be taking our winter musings out on the road, playing a trinity of shows in a trio of independent record stores. Sometimes winter provides us with a sense of togetherness and love and sometimes it leaves us feeling alienated, cold and playing a glockenspiel alone in a darkened room. It’s part of the year that will always be bittersweet and wild. This was the inspiration behind the record.

Artist Biography by Heather Phares
Φ   A duo combining the ethereality of British folk with the earthiness of the blues, Smoke Fairies is the project of Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire. The pair met at school in Chichester, West Sussex, and discovered that they felt more of a connection to classic rock, folk, and the blues than the more modern music that the other kids listened to. While they were still in school, they began crafting their own take on those sounds incorporating their delicate harmonies, and named themselves Smoke Fairies after mystical creatures who scare and confuse late–night drivers. After school ended, Davies and Blamire traveled to New Orleans and other areas of the American South, performing at venues like Tipitina’s; they then settled in Vancouver for a year. In 2007, Smoke Fairies went on tour with Bryan Ferry after a mutual friend gave him a copy of the duo’s demos. The following year, Blamire and Davies released their official debut single, Living with Ghosts, as a 7" on the Music for Heroes label. The buzz around the duo grew in 2009, when releases like the EP Frozen Heart and the single Sunshine won acclaim from artists such as Richard Hawley, who took Smoke Fairies on tour with him that October, and Jack White, who had the duo open for the Dead Weather and recorded a single with them. The single, Gastown/The River Song, was released by White’s Third Man imprint that December and featured White on drums and guitar and Raconteurs/Dead Weather member "Little Jack" Lawrence as part of the backing band. Φ   In 2010 the group released the compilation Ghosts, as well as the full–length Through Low Light and Trees. Although much of the following year was spent touring the U.S., the duo preceded those dates with their first ever U.K. headline tour. Influenced by mid–'70s era Fleetwood Mac, Blood Speaks was issued in different territories between 2012 and 2013, before a self–titled synth pop–inspired fourth full–length saw the light of day in April 2014.
