♠   Richard Barbieri (born 30 November 1957, in London, England) is an English synthesizer player, keyboardist and composer. Originally coming to prominence in the late–1970s and early–1980s as a member of new wave pioneers Japan (and their brief 1989–1990 reincarnation as Rain Tree Crow), more recently he is known as the keyboard player in the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, of which he has been a member since 1993.♠   Richard Barbieri (* 30. listopadu 1957, Londýn, Anglie) je anglický skladatel a hráč na klávesové nástroje. Zpočátku byl ve Spojeném království známý díky účinkování v kapele Japan (v letech 1989 až 1990 Rain Tree Crow), ale od roku 1993 je známější jako člen progresivní rockové formace Porcupine Tree. V roce 2011 Barbieri spolupracoval spolu s frontmanem kapely Marillion Stevem Hogarthem na jeho sólovém projektu Not the Weapon But the Hand. Album vydalo vydavatelství Kscope Records v únoru 2012.
♠   Kromě nahrávání a koncertů Barbieri píše články pro několik publikací, komponuje hudbu pro filmy, programuje hudbu pro softwary a výrobce syntezátorů. Je častým hostem na vystoupeních elektronické improvizační skupiny The Bays. Příležitostně vypomáhá jako hráč na klávesy na vystoupeních Stevea Hogartha, zpěváka kapely Marillion. Hraje na jeho koncertním albu Live Body, Live Spirit z roku 2002. ■λ→  A Kscope label CD release of Lumen, a recording of the solitary Steve Jansen/Richard Barbieri concert from 1st November 1996.
■λ→  Performing songs from the duo’s Stone To Flesh, Stories Across Borders and Beginning To Melt albums, the show was recorded at the Milky Way as part of the famous Dutch Magazine OOR’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Jansen and Barbieri were joined on stage by Mick Karn and Steven Wilson.
■λ→  Although the concert wasn’t intentionally recorded for release, after hearing back the direct line stereo mix, Jansen and Barbieri decided it contained elements that brought the studio versions to life in a unique way. There were no options to alter anything from the 1996 mix, but pleased with the recording, the duo released it as a limited edition run of 500 cassettes in the late 1990s.
■λ→  All that is heard on Lumen is what happened on the night, warts and all. Lumen is, in every sense, a true live album.
■λ→  The bonus track Crossing The Border was recorded during the Stories Across Borders sessions. The track was rediscovered earlier this year as a rough mix and has been sonically embellished by Steve Jansen.
■λ→  CD in digipak sleeve featuring cover artwork designed by Carl Glover.
Steve Jansen biography
■λ→  Born 1959 into a family of five and grew up in South East London. Acquiring guitars in ‘71 along with brother David (Sylvian) they began to create their own music inspired by early Bolan/Finn Recordings. Steve switched to drums in ‘74 as being left handed was too limiting for guitar. School friends Mick Karn (bass) and Richard Barbieri (keyboards) joined to form Japan. Signed to german label hansa in 1977. Success in japan sustained the band until signing with Virgin Records in 1980. The rest of Japan’s history is well documented. Due to the band’s success and sudden disbanding many compilations have since emerged. Original members reformed for a one–off recording as rain tree crow in 1990.
■λ→  A consistent partnership developed between Steve and Richard Barbieri and together they produced a series of 5 studio albums between 1985 and 1996 for Virgin Records, Venture records, and their own independent label medium productions which Steve formed in 1991 together with with Karn and Barbieri. These were primarily instrumental works with occasional vocal compositions. Steve has sustained a long term co–writing / recording / touring relationship with Yukihiro Takahashi (Yellow Magic Orchestra). He has also teamed up with various artists for other medium productions releases. Aside from these collaborations, work has been diverse. Steve has contributed as a musician, composer, producer, mixing engineer and live performer to alternative and occasional mainstream artists. Post 2000 steve worked in collaboration with David Sylvian on various recordings as a member of a thee piece nine horses for Samadhi sound. Steve released his debut solo album ‘Slope’ in 2007 followed by various other releases and reissues Which can be found on the discography page.
