Artist Biography by William Ruhlmann
•Ξ• UndeadTen Years After was a British blues-rock quartet consisting of Alvin Lee (born December 19, 1944, died March 6, 2013), guitar and vocals; Chick Churchill (born January 2, 1949), keyboards; Leo Lyons (born November 30, 1944) bass; and Ric Lee (born October 20, 1945), drums. The group was formed in 1967 and signed to Decca in England. Their first album was not a success, but their second, the live Undead (1968) containing "I'm Going Home," a six-minute blues workout by the fleet-fingered Alvin, hit the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Stonedhenge (1969) hit the U.K. Top Ten in early 1969. Ten Years After's U.S. breakthrough came as a result of their appearance at Woodstock, at which they played a nine-minute version of "I'm Going Home." Their next album, Ssssh, reached the U.S. Top 20, and Cricklewood Green, containing the hit single "Love Like a Man," reached number four. Watt completed the group's Decca contract, after which they signed with Columbia and moved in a more mainstream pop direction, typified by the gold-selling 1971 album A Space in Time and its Top 40 single "I'd Love to Change the World." Subsequent efforts in that direction were less successful, however, and Ten Years After split up after the release of Positive Vibrations in 1974. They reunited in 1988 for concerts in Europe and recorded their first new album in 15 years, About Time, in 1989 before disbanding once again. In 2001, Ric Lee was preparing the back catalog for re-release when he discovered the Live at the Fillmore East 1970 tapes. He approached Alvin about getting back together to promote the lost album, but Alvin Lee declined. The rest of the band was up for it, though, and together with guitarist Joe Gooch, Ten Years After started touring again. In addition to touring the world, this new incarnation recorded its first new material in about a decade and a half and released Now in 2004 and added the live double CD set Roadworks in 2005. Alvin Lee died on March 6, 2013 at the age of 68 due to complications from a routine surgery.

•Ξ• In 1967, four young musicians from Nottinghamshire, England, Leo Lyons, Ric Lee, and Chick Churchill together with Alvin Lee, formed Ten Years After and became one of the biggest names and the most explosive quartet on the world stage.
•Ξ• Their now legendary encore, I’m Going Home performed at The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in August 1969, was captured on film and exposed their jazz, blues, rock amalgam to a large audience who were blown away by the intensity of the band’s performance when the Academy Award winning documentary was released. •Ξ• Their ten-minute appearance in the film is an acknowledged highlight and established Ten Years After a place in rock history.
•Ξ• From 1968 to 1975 constant touring, playing important musical events like The Newport Jazz Festival, The Miami Pop Festival, The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, The Toronto Peace Festival and huge venues like The Albert Hall London, Madison Square Gardens, NY and The Budokan, Tokyo, exposed the band’s music to a global audience. •Ξ• It is estimated that they performed to in excess of 75,000 new fans a week. Almost four million people a year, not counting those who saw the band in the Woodstock film. Between 1967 and 1974, Ten Years After recorded and released ten multi-million selling albums.
•Ξ• Sadly, Alvin Lee decided to go solo in 1975 and the group ceased touring and recording. However, there has always been a demand for Ten Years After and, over the following twenty-plus years, there were to be three short-lived attempts at reformation and one new studio record, About Time. Each time, Alvin quit to return to his solo career.
•Ξ• Starting in 2001, to take advantage in the growing interest in legendary bands like Ten Years After, EMI and Decca Records in conjunction with Ric Lee, digitally re-mastered and re-released the whole Ten Years After back catalogue, most with bonus tracks, including a “find that had lain unnoticed — the 1970 live recording of the band at its peak at the Fillmore East in New York. Ric and Chick both approached Alvin with a view to touring to support the releases, but Alvin declined. It was a frustrating situation and once again it seemed that fans would be denied hearing the music played live.
•Ξ• A chance opportunity early in 2002 for the three founder members of Ten Years After — Leo Lyons (bass), Chick Churchill (keyboards) and Ric Lee (Drums) to work together gave them an insight into the intense, re-awakened interest in the band. By public request, the band is back together. With new member, sensational, twenty-seven year old guitarist/vocalist Joe Gooch, they are recreating the music, energy and excitement they’ve been known for over the past four decades.
•Ξ• Ten Years After plays most of their classics, but it is not an oldies band riding around on past successes. It has taken up the reins and is riding into the future. Joe Gooch is fully conversant with all of Ten Years After’s previous triumphs, but he has a distinct personality that breathes new life into the band’s performance and helps forge a new direction with this highly respected team of legendary musicians.
•Ξ• Ten Years After... Now, the band’s first studio album, was released in April 2004 in Europe and came out on July 18th 2005 in the USA and Canada on the Fuel 2000 label. Throughout 2004 the band toured Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavia, France, Czech Republic and Canada. 2005 proved to be even busier with tours completed in Europe and concerts being finalized for 2006 in USA & Canada, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Dubai and many other territories.
•Ξ• August 2005 saw the release of TYA’s double live album “Roadworks” in Europe to great critical acclaim. The band toured Europe and the USA relentlessly during 05, 06, 07 and 08 but somehow managed to find time to record a bunch of new material. November 2008 saw the release of the latest studio album — “Evolution”. A long-awaited DVD, LIVE AT FIESTA CITY, was released in 2009.

•Ξ• Like The Beatles, The Jaybirds returned home to England, made the move from their hometown to London and secured their first recording contract with legendary record producer Joe Meek. From 1963 to 1966, as well as playing and managing The Jaybirds, Leo worked as a session musician, toured as a sideman with pop acts of the day, appeared in a play in London's West End and played a residency with poll winning British Jazz Guitarist Denny Wright.

RIC LEE
•Ξ• Ric began playing drums and percussion at school and joined two other school mates to form a three piece called The Falcons.
•Ξ• After only a short time with The Falcons, Ric was asked to join a well-known local group, Ricky Storm and the Stormcats. During this period, Ric met and studied with Dave Quickmire, drummer with the hottest group in the area, The Jaybirds.
•Ξ• The guitarist was Alvin Lee and the bassist, Leo Lyons. Dave left The Jaybirds to get married and insisted Ric audition for the post. Soon after, Ric took over the drum chair.
•Ξ• Chick Churchill joined as Road Manager but soon became keyboard player as The Jaybirds became the backing group for a chart vocal act, The Ivy League. In 1968, after an audition at London's Marquee Club under the name The Bluesyard (the only gig the group ever performed under this name) the quartet became the highly successful rock group, Ten Years After.
•Ξ• The band toured the world extensively, including completion of 28 tours of the USA in 8 years. The band performed at the 1969 WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL and appeared in the film of the event released the following year. Also in 1970 Ten Years After appeared at the ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL and in the film, which was only finally released in 1995! On several tours of the States, Ric found time to study at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachussetts with Alan Dawson, then drummer with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Ric also began teaching young enthusiasts privately when at home between touring commitments.
•Ξ• When Ten Years After ceased touring in 1976, Ric turned his attention to running his own Music Publishing, Management and Record Production company. One of the first signings to the publishing company was a song called I Can Prove It, which reached No 21 in the UK National singles chart in 1977. The company also promoted a song into the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest in the same year. During these years, Ric studied tuned percussion as a part time student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Gilbert Webster, percussionist with the BBC Radio Orchestra. •Ξ• When Gilbert moved to Manchester, Ric continued his studies with Robert Howes, percussionist with the Wren Orchestra. For about 18 months, commencing in 1980, Ric joined Stan Webb in the thirteenth incarnation of Chicken Shack, a sixties blues group that had a UK number one record "I'd Rather Go Blind" which was sung by Christine Perfect who went on to world fame with Fleetwood Mac. Chicken Shack toured the UK and Europe many times in this short period and made an album for RCA Records "Roadies' Concerto".
•Ξ• Ten Years After re-formed again in 1983 for the Marquee Club’s 25th Anniversary During this short "rebirth", Ric managed the group; negotiating contracts, arranging publicity, organising travel and performance budgets and playing the kit! Between 1984 and 1986, Ric managed several up and coming young acts and increased his publishing catalogue. A cover version of "I Can Prove It" was secured, sung by Phil Fearon, which charted at No 8 in the UK Gallup Chart and went on to be a multi-million selling record throughout Europe. Ten Years After re-formed yet again in 1988 and recorded a new album "About Time" in Memphis, Tennessee and spent the next four years touring Europe, the US and selected dates in the UK performing to sell-out crowds. In between tours Ric studied further drum techniques and gained experience of Latin percussion ensemble playing with Trevor Tompkins, Professor of Percussion at the Guildhall and the Royal College of Music. In 1994, Ric formed The Breakers with an old friend, Ian Ellis and together they wrote and produced their first studio album “MILAN”, which was released in July 1995. Along with tours of the UK and Europe, The Breakers were guests with Bryan Adams and Bonnie Raitt, on NBC Super Channel’s “Talking Blues” programme that aired in Europe in March 1996.
•Ξ• Another of Ric’s winning projects around the middle nineties was the production of a series of ambient albums, the most successful of which was “Spirit of Africa” This album has sold over 50,000 units in Europe and is due for re-launch next year. Ric worked again with Ten Years After, touring and performing at Festivals in America, Brazil and Europe between 1995 and 1999. More recently he was finding “gems” of “lost” recordings of the band, re-mastering them, writing sleeve notes and helping the companies involved re-issue and promote the products. Ric recorded an album in Nashville, USA in October 2001 with Leo Lyons and Texan guitar slinger, Vince Converse, due for release in the near future. One track from those sessions is included on “From Clarksdale to Heaven”, a tribute to veteran blues man John Lee Hooker, which also includes contributions by guitarists Jeff Beck and Gary Moore. Married with two young children Ric lives in the Derbyshire Dales, where he runs a highly successful holiday business, is writing his autobiography, a novel and still finds time to help youngsters learn to play percussion instruments!
Ric plays: Drums, Tympani, L A Percussion, Piano, Vibraphone & Associated Tuned Percussion
Date and place of birth: 20th October 1945 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
CHICK CHURCHILL
•Ξ• Chick began playing piano at the age of six and continued classical studies until the age of fifteen. At this point he became more interested in Blues and Rock and joined his first band, a Nottingham outfit, Sons Of Adam.At a local gig, Chick met Alvin Lee of The Jaybirds, in whose line-up were bassist, Leo Lyons and drummer Ric Lee.
•Ξ• At first, Chick joined as Road Manager but soon became keyboard player when The Jaybirds became the backing group for a chart vocal act, The Ivy League.
•Ξ• In 1968, after Chick secured an audition for the band at London's Marquee Club under the name The Bluesyard (the only gig the group ever performed under this name), the quartet became the highly successful rock group, Ten Years After.
•Ξ• They toured the world extensively, including 28 tours of the USA in 8 years. August 1969 saw them play the unique WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL and appear in the WOODSTOCK FILM, released the following year. Also in 1970, Ten Years After appeared at the ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL and in the film, which was finally released in 1995! When Alvin left Ten Years After in 1976 to go solo for the first time, Chick became Professional Manager at Chrysalis Music, the company owned by his then manager, Chris Wright. A year later, Chick left Chrysalis Music and founded a partnership with Tim Whitsett as Whitsett Churchill Music Publishing. They specialised in publishing and promoting American artists from the Southern States, where Tim Whisett had his roots. Following on from this, Chick furthered the career of The News, a group he managed and signed to a lucrative deal with Polydor Records.
•Ξ• Ten Years After re-formed again in 1983 for the Marquee Club's 25th Anniversary, performed two large European festivals in Belgium and Switzerland and were special guests at The Reading Festival, the year of headliner Thin Lizzy's final concert.

JOE GOOCH
•Ξ• Joe Gooch grew up in a musical environment due to his parents being keen jazz, blues and classical music fans. The sound track to his early years was made up of artists and composers such as Stéphanne Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Robert Johnson, Debussy, Steely Dan and John Mayall...
•Ξ• By thirteen, taking his music seriously, he enrolled on a course of classical guitar lessons. The disciplines he learnt were a good grounding for him, but he soon realized his interest lay outside of the classical sphere and moved towards other styles including rock and blues.
•Ξ• At first, influenced by his childhood heroes, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Guy and later Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci and Larry Carlton amongst others, Joe experimented with various musical styles; constantly looking for new ideas and inspiration to expand and improve his techniques.
•Ξ• He strives relentlessly, to be a better player and to express himself with an individual voice. Joe can communicate his emotions through strong, energetic playing, and gives a sensational new dynamic to a highly respected world renowned team of musicians.
•Ξ• Since his early teens, Joe has been involved in many recording projects and has gigged around with numerous bands, but on joining Ten Years After he immediately felt at home. He loves touring with Leo, Chick and Ric and enjoys the unique synergy that is created between the band and the audience.
Joe plays: Guitar — and uses Tube Thomsen amplifiers.

ALVIN LEE
1944 — 2013
•Ξ• Born in Nottingham, England, ALVIN LEE began playing guitar age 13 and formed the core of the band Ten Years After by aged 15. Originally influenced by his parent's collection of jazz and blues records, it was the advent of rock and roll that truly sparked his interest and creativity, and guitarists like Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore provided his inspiration.
•Ξ• The Jaybirds, as Lee's early band was called, were popular locally and had success in Hamburg, Germany, following the Beatles there in 1962. But it wasn't until the band moved to London in 1966 and changed its name to TYA that international success beckoned. The band secured a residency at the legendary Marquee Club, and an invitation to the famous Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival in 1967 led to their first recording contract. The self titled debut album surprisingly received play on San Francisco's underground radio stations and was enthusiastically embraced by listeners, including concert promoter Bill Graham who invited the band to tour America for the first time in the summer of 1968. Audiences were immediately taken with Lee's distinctive, soulful, rapid fire guitar playing and the band's innovative mix of blues, swing jazz and rock, and an American love affair began. TYA would ultimately tour the USA 28 times in 7 years, more than any other U.K. band.
•Ξ• Appearing at the famed Woodstock Festival, Lee's virtuoso performance was one of the highlights and remains today a standard for many other guitarists. Captured on film in the documentary of the festival, his inspired playing catapulted him into superstardom, and soon the band was playing arenas and stadiums around the globe. •Ξ• Although Lee later lamented that he missed the intimacy of smaller venues, there is no denying the impact the film made in bringing his music to a worldwide audience.
•Ξ• TYA had great success, releasing ten albums together, but by 1973 Lee was feeling limited by the band's style. With American gospel singer Mylon LeFevre and a host of rock talents like George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Ron Wood and Mick Fleetwood , he recorded and released On The Road To Freedom, a highly acclaimed album that was at the forefront of country rock. A year later, in response to a dare, Lee formed Alvin Lee & Company to play a show at the Rainbow in London and released it as a double live album, In Flight. An energetic mix of rhythm & blues and rock, with a tribute to Elvis Presley thrown in for good measure, Lee once, in his understated fashion, called this band "a funky little outfit". They were far more than that and various members of the band continued on with Lee for his next two albums, Pump Iron and Let it Rock. He finished out the 70s with a powerhouse trio he called Ten Years Later who also released two albums, Ride On and Rocket Fuel, and toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States.
•Ξ• The 80s brought another change in Lee's direction, with two albums that were strong collaborations with Rarebird's Steve Gould and an extensive tour with the Rolling Stones' Mick Taylor joining his band.
•Ξ• Lee's overall musical output includes more than 20 albums, including 1985's Detroit Diesel and the back to back 90s collections of Zoom and 1994 (I Hear You Rocking). Guest artists on both albums include George Harrison, whose brilliant slide guitar perfectly complements Lee's lead. Their duet on 1994's The Bluest Blues led one reviewer to call it "the most perfect blues song ever recorded."
•Ξ• "Alvin Lee in Tennessee", released in 2004, was recorded with rock and roll legends Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. The critically acclaimed album features an upbeat selection of songs that are timely and forward looking, yet borrow from Lee's beloved 50s rock and roll. It was followed in 2007 by Saguitar, a uniquely varied collection of songs that flowed from melancholic blues to raucous rock to an innovative interpretation of rap.
•Ξ• Throughout it all, Alvin Lee managed to stay true to himself, making the music he wanted without outside influence or expectations. His most recent CD "Still On the Road to Freedom" , released in August 2012, takes the listener on an musical journey to the past and present and back again, enthralling us with his talent and music and proving without a doubt that he was able to do it his way...and still deliver the goods.
•Ξ• On March 6, 2013, Alvin Lee passed away from unforseen complications following a routine surgical procedure for atrial arrhythmia. He is survived by his wife Evi, daughter Jasmin, former partner Suzanne (Jasmin's mother), sisters Irma and Janice and scores of fans around the world. Although he has left us, his music will live on. Website Alvin Lee: http://www.alvinlee.com/

COLIN HODGKINSON
Born: 14 October 1945, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Instruments: Bass, guitar
Career:
•Ξ• He has worked with Chris Rea, The Eric Delaney Band, Back Door (of which he was co-founder), Alexis Korner, Whitesnake, Jon Lord, Jan Hammer, Paul Butterfield, The Spencer Davis Group, Pete York, and The Electric Blues Duo, as well as with Ian "Stu" Stewart's boogie-woogie band, Rocket 88. In 2007 Hodgkinson became a member of The British Blues Quintet, (along with Zoot Money, Maggie Bell, Miller Anderson and Colin Allen).
•Ξ• Hodgkinson is a musician who has developed a left-hander bass technique which can replace both lead and rhythm guitar if necessary, (as exemplified by his work with the jazz-rock trio Back Door — line-up: saxophone, bass, drums). A typical gig involving Hodgkinson will be a solo slot in which he will render a bass and vocals only rendition of a classic blues song, a particular favourite being his take on Jesse Fuller's "San Francisco Bay Blues." This track was included in his solo album The Bottom Line, issued in 1998, which consists mostly of bass solos.
•Ξ• On 28 October 2008 the Colin Hodgkinson Band released Back Door Too!, recorded with Rod Mason (saxophone) and Paul Robinson (drums).
•Ξ• In March 2014, Hodgkinson was announced as the new bass player for Ten Years After, following the departure of Leo Lyons two months prior.
•Ξ• Colin plays on 53 albums + 2 own solo albums.

A year later, Chick left Chrysalis Music and founded a partnership with Tim Whitsett as Whitsett Churchill Music Publishing. They specialised in publishing and promoting American artists from the Southern States, where Tim Whisett had his roots.

ALVIN LEE
