More of a roots band in the style of Tedeschi Trucks and Little Feat, The Strait Shooters certainly know how to lay down some great blues, but they also apply their southern soul feel and funky vibe across a variety of material that keeps audiences well entertained.
♠•♠  The band formed in 2013, following a ‘merger’ of ‘Strange Brew’ from Wellington, and ‘The Federation’ from Queenstown. The name of the band was born from the fact that the 5 members of the band live in New Plymouth, Wellington and now Dunedin — meaning they have to keep shooting back and forth across Cook Strait to various gigs and tours. Featuring Warwick ‘Electrolux’ Murray — guitar, vocals, harmonica; ‘Ramblin’ Rick Stringer — keyboards, vocals, harmonica; ‘QT’ Lee — vocals, keyboards; Aaron ‘the funky chief’ Nonoa — bass, vocals; Mark ‘Tom Tom’ Thomas — drums.Fotka uživatele Ben Tais Amundssen.♠•♠  If you like great blues, hot funk, smooth soul and bad jokes, then get along to catch one of their gigs on this tour. A great night “shakin’ what ya Mama gave ya!”

♠•♠  What better thing to spend Sunday afternoon doing than listening to funk and blues?
♠•♠  That is what Strait Shooters singer and keyboardist Richard Stringer thinks.
♠•♠  “We have some fun with it, so there is good banter, we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” he said.
♠•♠  The Strait Shooters were named for the band members geographical locations in Wellington and Queenstown, resulting in many trips across the Cook Strait.
♠•♠  Stringer, who is based in Queenstown, said that it was easy to communicate across the strait.
♠•♠  “It’s not that expensive and difficult to get to Wellington and we just enjoy it.”
♠•♠  After meeting at the Fiji Jazz and Blues Festival in 2011, two bands, Strange Brew from Wellington and Federation from Queenstown, got along so well they decided to merge.
♠•♠  Their beginnings as two bands mean the Strait Shooters are able to be more flexible with who performs where.
♠•♠  “We have a Wellington~based rhythm section and a Queenstown one, and we all know the same music,” Stringer said.
♠•♠  The band leaders Stringer and Warwick Murray are currently collaborating on a new album of original music that they are hoping to release by the end of the year.
♠•♠  Blues music has been a lifelong love affair for Stringer, whose father was a jazz music.
♠•♠  “I was born and raised on jazz but blues is my passion.
♠•♠  “I lived in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1990s  and listened and learned my craft there,” he said.
♠•♠  Blues and soul music have always been well listened to in New Zealand but this is the first time they have performed in Southland, he said.
