Wilco — Being There (Deluxe Edition) (December 1, 2017)

Wilco — Being There (Deluxe Edition) (December 1, 2017)  Wilco — Being There (Deluxe Edition) (December 1, 2017)♠♠            At the start of 1996, Wilco seemed like an also~ran. The group’s debut album, 1995’s A.M., had showed plenty of promise, but it was overshadowed by Trace, the debut album by Son Volt, the other band born from the breakup of the alt~country outfit Uncle Tupelo. Where A.M. was upbeat yet unfocused, Trace was moody and deep. Wilco’s leader, Jeff Tweedy, responded in 1996 with Being There. The double album built on Tweedy’s strengths as a pop~rock songwriter while remaining tethered — but not too tightly — to the rootsy rock he was known for. The result was Wilco’s first artistic triumph, setting the stage for many to follow. And as the disc of outtakes, alternates and demos from the forthcoming Being There: Deluxe Edition amply show, even Tweedy’s reject folder overflows with treasures.
♠♠            Wilco was only a few years away from realizing just how radically the group could sculpt, deconstruct and reinvent itself in the studio, but Being There was the point at which one of America’s great underdog bands began to come into its own.

Download: Misunderstood; Monday; Outtasite (Outta Mind); I Got You (At The End Of The Century); Outta Mind (Outta Sight); The Lonely 1
★     Upon its release in 1997, Wilco’s second album was a dramatic statement of intent, demonstrating both Jeff Tweedy’s fecundity as songwriter, slipping between introvert and extrovert, naturalist and surrealist, and the band’s easy command of diverse rock modes, from wistful country~rock to raggedy~ass punk and Stonesy raunch~rock. One of the few double albums that wouldn’t have been better as a single album, it’s now become a quadruple set through an additional trove of out~takes and demos, here presented as two vinyl gatefold doubles in a slip~case. Unearthed tracks such as “Late Blooming Son” and “Losing Interest” add further wrinkles to the original album’s overarching theme, which grappled with the duties and delusions of rock’n’roll from both sides of the stage curtain. Most notably, “The Lonely 1” offered a sharply~observed insight into the symbiotic nature of the artist/fan relationship, while for “Misunderstood”, the band switched instruments to bring a ramshackle charm appropriate to the reluctant ambitions of its slacker musician protagonist. A landmark album. ♠♠★     http://www.independent.co.uk/
